Topic: Trannie leak

I have a 95 yj with a 4cyl automatic trannie....It has a pretty good leak between the T/C and the trannie and I need to address it as soon as I can.My wife doesn't appreciate the change in color of the driveway .The Chilton manual i have isn't exactly a big help and I need all the help I can get.I have the wrenching skills just above a chimp.Is this just a straight forward removal or are there some little things I should know...I was also thinking of having my trans rebuilt..it seems a bit tired and doesn't like to climb the steeper roads around here..it has 180,000 on it...Should i just pull it out as one and seperate it on the bench....anything special I should ask for when getting the trans done..IE: shift kit..well thats all i can think of lol....thanks in advance for your time and help ...Joey

not an expert on autos but as far as removing them i suggest first to drain both fluids out, remove them separate and not together. the t-case drain plug is not the one on the underside (from what i remember) it is on the other side of the output shaft (the one on the underside is the chain tensioner i think). there are a few guys here that have auto transmission so hopefully they'll jump in with some information/tips/tricks.

Remove the driveshafts, transfer case linkage, and the 6 nuts attaching the transfer case to the transmission.  Remove the transfer case and replace the transmission output seal.  That should be it.

I have everything off and I am ready to drop the T/C...now for one of my chimp like questions...when i seperate the T/C from the automatic trannie to change the trans output shaft seal do I take out the bolts in front of the mount or behind the mount ....The book I have is of absolutely no help at all....Thanks Joey

hmm  , the t-case is mated to the tranny with nuts on the studs that are in the t-case - so if you're seeing bolts those are part of the transmission, you don't want to take that apart. Now questions is where do you see the leak? if it's where the bolts are (and not the t-case nuts) then your leak is not at the tranny output shaft. Take some pics so we can see what's going on there.

OK I gotcha thanks...The leak is right by the nuts....the fluid is coming out right on that seam...so take the 6 nuts off and slide the T/C back and the seal is right there?.....is there also a seal on the T/C side as well or just on the trannie side...sorry I never did this before and I am running solo so I need and will take all the help I can get...unfortunately pics aren't an option for me right now..I can try to get pics up later....thanks Joey

there's a seal on the tranny side but in your case i don't know if it seals on the output shaft or on the input shaft of the t-case (that's how the AX-5 manual is setup), doesn't really matter anyway - there is also a t-case seal that is on the input shaft.

I had to take care of some hunny do crap for my wife so I will be seperating them tomorrow....should I go ahead and replace all those seals while I have it open or does that entail more tearing down.If that is the case I think I best be happy I got this far lol....Thanks for the help sharpx it is very much appreciated...I hope I can return the favor sometime....thanks  ...Joey

It's likely the output seal of the tranny, it seals tightly around the transfer case input shaft once the transfer case is installed.  I highly doubt it's the seal on the transfer case input, they rarely go bad.

Here's what the back of the transmission will look like once you remove the transfer case.  The seal is around the output shaft.

Transfer case linkage?  Simply remove the 9/16" nut where it attaches to the transfer case, then pull the bar section of linkage off the transfer case.

I tried that and it is stuck pretty good.....thought maybe there was another way...well hoping lol...gotta go soak it again...PB Blaster rules....I really appreciate the help..this is my first time doing this...I am ok with the everyday basic stuff but when it comes to the heavy stuff I usually farm it out...but I said screw it I can do this lol....thanks Joey
