wire harness and computer question
« on: October 03, 2010, 04:46:54 PM »
I see that the 4.0 wasn't introduced until 1991.  I have a rebuilt 1988 but want to plug and play instead of using the 88 wire harness and computer.
is there a wire loom from block with computer to run the 6 cyl with the renix injector system?  Is it possible to get a wire harness that will work without having to rewire everything with the 88 harness?  Maybe use a 4.2 harness to run the renix injectors?  Any ideas or advice is appreciated.

can we use the same fuse box and guages?  can we hook a 6 to a 4 fuse block

you can install the distributor, wire harness, crank sensor, map sensor, AIT, coolant temp sensor and PCM from a 4.0 6 cylinder and run it that way (add injectors to that list too). not sure about the fuse box, if your's is a 91+ then you should be able to connect the engine bay harness of a 4.0 to your in-cab harness. I'm not sure if the flywheel crank teeth are the same, i think there are 3 groups of 4 equally spaced (120 deg) on the 4.0 flywheel (91-95)

ya you asked if you could use a 4.2L harness I think there carb.

is your 90yj multiport or even tbi?

does the 88xj have a donor trans to? because I don't think the trans will bolt up to the 4.0l if your swapping just the eng

I am mainly just wondering what harness I can get that will work with my existing fuse block.  I not worried about price.  Just only have 4 days to finish this project before I move to Denver.  Not really wanting to rewire the XJ computer and harness to what I have now.

holy crap dude you expect to swap the eng and completely wire it up in 4 days?   good luck with that.

my buddy did a complete swap going from a 95 yj 2.5L to a 4.0L with a 95 yj donor vehicle "everything complete. and if I remember correctly the fire wall pin out was different and he swapped all harnesses and fuse boxes and all under hood to make it all work. also the tach needs to be the 6cylinder one or it will read wrong.  It's not just as plug and play as it should be. esp being tbi I have no idea how that would work going to a 4.0L multi port renix witch I don't think was ever offered in a yj

anything is possible but 4 days it very short time line to get this swap done.

We are mocking up mounts today.  Dry fitting drive train as well.  Our problem is the wiring.  That is what we are running into.  Got a XJ wiring diagram just cant find a 90 YJ one that will print out ok.

There is no simply plug and play harness from another vehicle, it's gonna have to be a custom job either by you or a vendor.

By far the simplest thing to do, and more bang for your buck, would be to find a GM v8 with a carb, auto, and 231c.

he already bought the engine and transmission http://4bangerjp.com/forums/index.php/topic,8146.msg64713.html#msg64713

at this point the cheapest and fastest way to go is to mate the XJ harness he has to his YJ and hope it fires up.

or imo better get a YJ 91-95 full harness, PCM, intake manifold with throttle body and some of the engine accessories (distributor, flywheel if it's different and the PCM coolant temp sensor)
