I replaced the E3's with platinum Autolites this morning.

Good for you, glad to hear that. I have been pleased with my NGKs, I have tried others like my horror story with E-3s, bosh with the four prong thinga migiga and always came back to NGKs. I have them gapped at .039, backed by accel 42,000 volt coil and 8mm wires. Autolites are good.

I gapped the Platinum Autolites at .040 , MSD coil, Performance Distributors spark plug wires/rotor/cap. Got NGK's in the Explorer. Rockauto had the Platinum Autolites for  $2.15 each.

So I should be able to bump up from .039 to .040. I know it does not sound like much, but I have not tried that setting yet. I was also thinking of upgrading to magnecor wires. Have you heard any feedbacks on magnecor?

I have over gapped a plug. It misfired on that cylinder. You will know if you have overgapped a plug. I have 35,000 volts in the MSD coil and .040 is fine.

Ok, I have now driven 80 miles with the E3's out and the Platinum Autolites in. Significant difference. It feels more responsive and in the higher rpms, more powerful. I guess I had the E3's long enough to forgot what is was like to have "real" plugs in! My advice to anyone thinking of buying E3's is to stop thinking about it. They were good when I first put them in but over time (1 year) they diminished to average to less than average performance when compared to the Autolites I just put in.

So If I am running good at .039 on my NGKs, I should just let it be then. I mean how much difference would I be looking at as far as performance. I currently do not have any misfires, good power all around with good mileage.

I'd leave it alone. I have seen the debate go both ways. Some say it does increase the power others say no. In a 2.5L Jeep, with a good coil/plugs/ and wires, how much difference would it truly make to go from your .039 to lets say .045 ???

Sounds good to me. But I probably will swap out my 8mm accel wires and try some magnacor wires. I have heard good things about them delivering full energy from your coil.

I ran E3s for a few days and then detonated a piston. Could have been the fact that my head was cracked and i needed to dump more fuel for combustion and being a hotter plug.... That was waaaaay back when i first got the jeep. since then i've read E3s are all hype.

More than hype, JUNK. It was not your cracked head or block, it was simply and clearly the E 3 plugs. I had a similar experience, also way back. I currently run a accel coil which is rated at 42,000 volts, accel 8mm wires, along with NGK plugs gapped at .039. I can probably run a bigger gap, but we will run test later. Also have many other mods under hood. About the only mod I do not have is electric fan or any type of chips. My rig runs good, quick, fast, good top speed and plenty torque. O yeah I only run a 2in BB with 31s and discos. Thinking of bumping up to 32s or 33s, but I am so happy with my performance and power. I will probably keep it the way it is until I can afford a coil lift, gears, and bigger tires. Money, money, money.

First full tank of gas with the E3's out and the Platinum Autolites in resulted in slightly better MPG at 18.08

I have not taking my MPG, but I know I can fill up the tank and get about 80miles to half a tank which of course take would be 160 Miles to a full tank. I forget how many gallons a 2.5L tank is. I believe its a 15 gallon tank, not sure.

that's the wrong way to calculate mpg, probably how pple end up with 25mpg or 10.

you reset the odometer when you fill up, drive a while, fill up again and write down how many gallons went in, take the odometer reading and divide it by the number of gallons.
