My alternator in my 95 YJ has died. I have looked at list of options for a new higher output alternator , but I am unclear as to what ones will swap right over. And if not what do I need to do to make them work. I am very interested in the 160 amp ones. As everyone knows a winch really taxes a charging system.

BTW its a 4cy manual with no A/C, once I am done getting the alternator  back in I have a OBA york that will go back in the A/C spot.

I would greatly appreciate the help.

i got a 136Amp Grand Cherokee in mine, $30 or something like that at the junkyard, direct swap just a minimal reconfiguration on the output prong but nothing major (the shield needs to be rotated that's all) - comes with the 8 groove pulley but can be used as is or replaced with the 6 groove one, i didn't bother swapping it. There's a good writeup in the FAQ with part numbers and all for various options, there is a 150 amp or so OEM listed in there that works on YJ, can't remember which vehicle comes out of but didn't find one at the time so i went with the GC one instead.

If you want higher amps then you'l have to get a modded one.

I bought a Load Boss from Flea Bay about 5 years ago rated at 164A (more or less; dont rememebr the exact rating, but it was more or less around there) that has held on quite nicely to all the abuse I have thrown its way (getting buried in mud, winching, etc.).  Was not that expensive either.  Just remember to upgrade the wires if you go to a larger alternator; its quite likely that the stock wiring will not hold up to abuse if you are winching or similar...

jfrabat   I figured I would have to upgrade the wires to at least 4ga. Thanks I will have to look into that one as well.

That list of alternators does not tell me if they will work in my YJ other then the stock well duh. I sure hope it will work. My original question was and still is will any of those Higher Output Alternators work in my YJ as direct swap? I figured this is the one place I would be able to get a good answer since we all have 4 angry squires under the hood.

you have to bypass the PDC, there are 2 x 50Amp fuses in there that will limit your current to 100Amp

Can I just use a lager fuse set? Or would it be better to run the power straight to the batter with a larger in line fuse?

If possible, you want to run welding cables...  They have more strands, and as a result, not only are they more flexible, but have less resistance and more electricity will get to the battery instead of getting wasted as heat.  Also, run as thick a cable as you can; it's better to have more capacity than you need!  In my case, I used 2 gauge, IIRC (or was it 0?), but left the stock wiring in place as well.

Now in the PDC could I just bump up the value of the fuse size with a pair of 60 or 70 amp maxi fuses, along with bumping up my wire size. I like the idea of using welding wire I was thinking about that.

No, I am jfrabat there as well...  Same for Jeepz...

I just left the stock wiring in place, and ran a new wire directly to the battery...

The 136a alternator from fullsize Dodge trucks and vans is a direct bolt-in once you swap the pulley and plastic boot from your old alternator to the 136a unit.

I run a 160a unit in my '95 YJ, and ran an extra cable from the alternator output to the pos side of the battery.

So just run a extra pos wire what about on the neg side?  On that 160 amp. Did you have to make any mods to make it fit?

Sorry for all the questions I always ask a lot on new things that I don't know about.
