Need help should I trade?
« on: November 08, 2009, 09:04:54 AM »
Not  sure if I have in the right area. I have a mint condition 2003 yamaha r6 a friend wants to trade me a good condition 95 jeep rio grand 4cyl. It does have a lift, warn 9i winch, prerunner bumbers, and nice rims and tires 33s.
should I trade? The jeep does need a new clutch though.
Just need some help deciding.
Thanks

how much is your Yamaha worth and how many miles on the Jeep? any other upgrades (aside from the lift and tires)?

tires/winch/lift - if it runs well and is in good condition (including tires) i would guess you could be even-steven on it - tough call. Do some research as well and see how much they go for on local listings

yeah i didnt see the winch. Also depends on the rims, tires, and lift. Depends on how well they run. Otherwise, doesnt seem worth it to me. :bandit:

if the Jeep has that many miles and for $5000, I would expect it to be pristine.  lift, tires and wheels don't necessarily increase it's value much if at all.  A 9000i is a good winch but people were dumping them aa few years back when the 9.5 HS came out.

x2 on being in good condition
also depends on what plans you have for it - a set of new 33s are about $1k. rims are anywhere from $200 to $1000 and add 20% if it has the matching spare. installed lift another $400 at least + labour. winch and mount another $300 (at least if you get one that is used) - so if he plans to do all this anyway i'm thinking is not a bad start, but if these add-ons are not in good condition then could be worth getting one that is stock and buying these after, you still need to do the work and running around for them. The Jeeps are priced well here in BC, Canada even YJs so i could be influenced by that - checking the local listings is probably best. Seen some great deals on Jeeps in US, but you never know what you're getting hence the advantage of knowing the guy who's selling (trading) it - so i assume if it's a friend he will tell you if there are any issue with the vehicle (where you could get a lemon otherwise).

Keep in mind too that it depends on your area. A $3k YJ in Cali may pull $5k here in WI. A clean mostly stock 88 just sold down the road from me for $4k

Bottom line is if it's worth it to you then do it. I might pay a small bit extra for something if it was what I wanted and it "dropped in my lap" so to speak.

sounds like a nice jeep, any rust?  also biggest question is do you like it?  and do you like it better than your bike?

overall use of the vehicle can play into this as well. i consider a jeep's full usage potential to be top down, doors off and on a trail. im assuming your bike isnt your only mode of transportation and that weather limits its use. if you live in an area where your bike can be used year round, the jeep (assuming it runs well) can be an equal trade to your bike. with the bike, the gratification is instant-get on and ride...the jeep may leave you laking in the fun factor the bike once had if you can only experience its potential (doors off, top down) only so many months a year esp if you dont have trails to run that are nearby. i think you would have to consider the change incoporated in the trade-given that you would be trading on a "recreational vehicle" status other than a daily driver status. would the jeep be able to replace the recreation and fun that you had with the bike..would you be able to use it recreationally to its fullest?

x2 on the rust. Rusted frames will get you failed in state inspections. Too good to be true only exists in fairy tales.  Friend or not-- have the jeep looked over by someone you trust!

Get the Jeep....and start the fun of dumping $$$ in to it. Still more fun that a rice rocket! You will live longer in the Jeep as well. Funny....... this coming from a Harley Rider.
