Title: aFe Headers?
Post by: Wheezer on September 27, 2014, 01:37:37 PM
So, my piece of crab Borla header has finally cracked. I say piece of crap because the thing has not fit since day one, Borla's response to repeated requests for assistance/advice was to block my phone number, they will not return my calls or emails. Replacing the header isn't going to happen, I wouldn't put another Borla on even if they did honor the warranty. I had for a long time thought that Banks was the way to go but it seems they have cracking issues as well. Now I see that aFe offers a header for the 2.5L. Has anyone here had any experience with aFe? I am assuming that their header is CARB certified. Thanks!

http://afepower.com/shop/details_new.php?partno=48-46206&filter&menu=gas&engine=2.5L&searchtype=vehicle&make=Jeep&model=Wrangler&year=1992&engine=2.5L&&brandID=99

Note: This header is not currently CARB exempt and is not available for sale in California or for use on any vehicle registered with the California Department of Motor Vehicle.

If you have a CARB sticker for your Borla, that might be enough to trick them.

 Yeah, I finally got around to looking it up, very disappointing. I messaged them to ask if CARB exemption was in the works. Nothing yet.

If you have a Borla CARB sticker you will probably be okay with the AFE since they usually just look to see if you have the sticker.  You might remove the AFE plate that tacked onto the tube but that probably wouldn't be an issue.

Or else wait and see if AFE will pay for CARB exemption.

The CARB "sticker" is a badge tack welded onto one of the tubes. I could probably get it off of the Borla unit, I could then see if it could be tacked onto the aFe header. Right now I am waiting to see if aFe is going to get CARB exemption, then again I am looking into leaving this godforsaken state in the not too distant future. I may wait until then to rebuild my exhaust system. I should tell y'all what I went through to get a cat for my son's Jeep ('98 TJ Sport). They require you to have one but not to make one available to you. How is that supposed to work?

One of the reasons I decided NOT to import the Jeep to Costa Rica when I lived there (other than the high cost of importing it!) was that then the Jeep would have to pass emissions testing; since I do not have a cat, that would have probably shown up in the test!  But I have to say, that heather looks mighty attractive!

It'll be a few weeks before I get the engine installed, so far so good.

Im getting ready to pull the trigger on one of these. Hopefully I wont have the issues that people have been seeing with the Borlas. Ive shopped it on Google and found a place selling for $335 with no tax and free shipping. Its the best price Ive seen yet, as the price on aFe's website went up since the last time I looked at it late last year. Ill be calling tommorow to get it coming.

The website says the flange is 1/2 inch thick, do you know the thickness of the flange on the intake manifold?  I had issues when replacing my stock exhaust manifold as it was thicker than the intake manifold.  ended up machining to the same thickness as they would not tighten correctly.
