I'm ordering these from Q-tec. Do they come in pairs or is the price ($39.99) for 1? Also, anyone else use them? What do you think of them? I'm getting ready for the spring/summer trail rides and I'm doing a few minor upgrades. Oh, I'm getting new tires on Tuesday. I'm sticking to 235/75/15's because of the auto trans and the 3.73's. Made the appointment today for 5 BFG all terrain ko's. I'd love to go to a full mud terrain but can't since it's a daily driver that gets a lot of highway use. I need something that will last for a bit.

This thing?

Looks like just one, also looks like a really bad design. 10,000 - maybe in a straight line, but I'd bet an angle or sideways pull would bend that thing off at the first bolt. I would not pass that as a tow point for my clubs inspection.
-
I definitely would not cheap out on a safety item, go for a bumper with welded through mounts.
-
Me no like...just get a new front bumper with tabs welded on...
-
Or a conventional tow hook is just fine, no need for a whole new bumper.
-
I'm not a fan of those especially since they're 1 each and not sold in pairs. Standard tow hooks are OK but if you want something different, I'd go with Euro-spec tow points. They're stamped steel and are plenty strong.
Otherwise, forget about mounting the hooks there and weld or bolt on some D-link shackles to the bumper. (I'll probably go this route with my bumper)

What's that look like?
-
Well, they aren't allowed to have pointy hooks on the fornt of their cars and trucks. It's basically a bracket with two small holes drilled for the frame and a large hole punched at the other end of a loop. Then the bracket is bent into an L shape. I think earlier ones actually used a swivel with a loop like a actual shackle.

im sorry but those euro jeeps look like they took a few shoots to the balls with the plastic ends to the bumper blending into the fenders :crap:

Not a big fan of the euro spec design. Got a source where a can get the D-link shackles? I'm going to need something with the mounts included. The way things stand now I have no way to mount a d-ring shackle to the stock bumper. All I've got is my stock tow hooks.

Don't know if I'd use them on a stock bumper though......

I agree, even with a pretty good side backing plate a YJ bumper would be marginal. Pretty sure that a TJ bumper is even thinner.

I was thinking the same thing. I have some 1/4" sheet metal that I was thinking of using to mod the stock bumper. Also, I noticed that the stock bumper isn't attached to the frame on the bottom, only the top where the stock tow hooks are. Makes things kind of flimsy if you ask me. Right now a I don't have the cash to buy all new bumpers but I do have a good supply of scrap steel and my welding has gotten much better since I first posted the pic of my "Redneck Trophy." I'll see what I can come up with. It might be a few weeks but I'll post pics when I get things finished.
Oh, thanks for the link jeffy.

Ok, I'm going with these and they are getting attached to the frame. They are NOS from a dodge M37.

These is what I'm using. They are from a Nissan I once owned. Even the holes line directly up.

Those are nice. I guess they'd be along the lines of the euro specs jeffy was talking about? I actually came across a pair of something similar today in the scrap yard but I'm getting such a good deal on the D-rings that I just can't pass them up. ;) Oh, and tonight at dinner the wife actually mentioned getting a set of Smittybilt Rock crusher bumpers! All I had to do was taker her to dinner. Who knew this would work?!

Going with those shackles from the M37, you have to be careful. I'm thinking due to the curvature, they are primarily designed for lifting.

Besides, thinking mounting on the front, will the triangulation mounting fit on the frame topside? Is the frame wide enough? The original bolts for the bumper top and bottom will have a nut welded on the inside of the frame.

One other comment - if you do organized trail riding, most of the inspection guidelines I've run accross do not allow pin retained clevises- only screw type clevises. The reason is there's a good chance of shearing the pin in a side loaded pull.
-
You both bring up good points. My plan was to weld a 1/4" plate between the front frame rails and then mount them to it. They are pretty beefy at 10 pounds each and they use a 1" pin. I've never been on an organized trail rider so I'll have to rethink the pin retained clevis thing. I didn't know that that's how they did things. Well, I have them so maybe I'll save them for something else. Maybe I will go with the euro spec kind.
-
The Euro-spec look like a good way to go. Maybe I'm being too careful but have decided to use double 1/4" angle iron (one on top of the other for double thickness) for my front tow point, mounted like the Nissan parts posted above.

those green d-rings look sweet. military..

Yup, I've been watching them on ebay for almost a week. Last night I won the auction for a total of $82.00 including S&H. Can't beat that. Even if I don't use them on the Jeep I'm sure I can find use for them somewhere. 8)
