hey guys, just wondering if the AX5 from a 98 TJ will bolt in place of a 95 YJ?
I am thinking they will, just wanted some backup before I go ahead and buy the tranny.

Yes, and it would make a better choice then to rebuild the old transmission.

is this for a strength difference between the 2 tranny's, or simply because of cost?

Rebuilt AX's don't seem to last as long and for the price of a rebuilt you can have a low mileage salvage.

No strength difference, and should bolt right in.

thanks everyone.
I kinda ruled out the rebuild already. Local shop quoted around $1000 if I take tranny out (and providing the problem is what I described).

You will have use your YJ bell housing and slave cylinder, but they will bolt right up.

This thread has been dead for a long time but I'll add this anyway:
Got the AX5 rebuilt about 6 years ago and it is doing fine (drive only about 1200 miles per year). The cost was about $400 at a local transmission shop.
Recently bought a TJ AX5 in good working condition (just to have as a spare) for $150.
It's pretty clear which is the better deal even with the low cost rebuilds available here in Mexico.
