Title: Steering box upgrades

Looking for ideas to upgrade my steering box. I was thinking of the Dodge Durango box. Also Tommy Lee is not far from me and they make some nice stuff. Not sure on costs thou. What else is out there that is a bolt on upgrade?

Hmm, I thought the Durango box was an upgrade for TJ'ers?

I saw a write up on JF where someone put one on a YJ. Other than having 3 mounting holes VS. 4 it seemed to be a direct swap. Even used the YJ power steering lines.

If you go Durango try to find one on the Junkyard out of a truck with fairly low milage.
A lot of the rebuilt stuff is very poor quality

From what I've read the main reason to do it on a YJ is to get a faster ratio.  The YJ doesn't have the seal issues the TJ's do.

Never heard of anyone breaking a steering box on the trail that didn't already have problems.  Broken frame at the box used to be common on CJ's that see a lot of trails.  Although, if you're replacing a bad box anyway, why not.  Probably be fine with a stock box and a cooler.

Not sure I need to upgrade. No leaks or funny noise, seems to steer fine. My buddy said he saw some play in the sector shaft. Not sure if this is normal. Not sure how much play he saw.
I have a PS box brace. I have a cooler that has been in the garage for 3-4 years. Even have the fluid to add it. Just have never gotten around to it.

Not sure it would seem that more holes = stronger. The YJ frame is boxed so this adds alot of strenght over the CJ frame. I would think with a steering box brace it would be fine.

But again I am not sure if mine is going bad.

Is it normal to have play in the sector shaft?

it is normal to have a small amount of play but very little,  dont know the actual spec just know when i see them so cant help you too much but i would keep running it if you are not having problems and find a good deal with the wait and see for the durango box.  then if and when it goes you can just swap it,  plus if you give it time you probably can find a better deal then if you just set out convinced youre getting one now

Growl?  You mean when you max out the steering or are trying to turn with an obstruction like a rock?  Yours growls all the time?

While in 4WD when I turn the steering wheel back and forth while driving. It does not do it when in a straight line or a slight turn but when there is alot of steering unput it whines/growls makes noise. Weather there is an obstruction in the trail or if it's a dirt road.
In 2WD it's quite.

It seems to have a larger bore so that should mean it's stronger. The faster ratio is avail in the NON snow plow Durango. The snow plow box is the same steering ratio as the stock YJ box.

I saw a whole smear of them on www.car-part.com They start at $300 and go all the way down to $50. I would imagine that mileage varies. A call to the yard should get you an idea of how many miles it has.

yeah i gotta go with jeffy on this one,  if you are causing hard input like up against something or just the pressure of the 4wd pushing on the front end it is going to make some noise,  again i would recommend taking your time looking for a good deal and hang on to it till you have a failure

I gotta agree that the pump noise is normal.
It's the side to side movement of the sector shaft in the steering box that has me a bit worried. It's not enough to cause a leak or any issues with steering but I would imagine it will get worse overtime. Maybe it's normal, I don't know. Steering failures...well they suck! I'd like to avoid them if I could :lol:

Most any car or truck manufacturer recommends against the use of ATF it's a recipe for leaking seals, just use the recommended stuff and use a cooler, I know I have been lazy have a cooler, but its still siting on a shelf. They do make a difference though
