Title: Durango box install
Post by: czjeeper on September 20, 2009, 06:10:06 PM
If anybody is considering this, I HIGHLY recommend it!
I found one at a local yard already pulled for $50 thanks to car-part.com for doing the leg work!
I thought I would share a few things that might help people out.
The pitman arm has 4 symmetrical alignment notches...YOU CAN "clock" it wrong on the steering box! I did.
Make sure the steering box is centered before installation of the arm, and of course the steering wheel should be locked in the center position before pulling the pitman arm/drag link.
Just thought I would share...
Got it clocked right now, and i've got a nice, tight 1.5 turns lock to lock!

Bolt pattern is identical, but the top rear bolt is deleted on the Durango box.
Hose fittings are the same as well.
The box is wider, so the drag link will need to be shortened via the rod ends.

Should be a tad under 3 turns lock to lock, like 2 5/8 or something similar.

Durango box is a good easy upgrade.  I would also recommend drilling out the orifice in the PS pump to flow a little more fluid.  Using an external tranny cooler on your PS is a great upgrade to add capacity and keep the fluid cool, really important when running a locker up front.

I would only do the drilling mod.

How is it on the highway? This sounds cool but I'm afraid my junk would be way too sensitive on the freeway with only 1.5 turns lock to lock.

so is it 1.5 lock to lock or 3 lock to lock (1.5 each way from center)

and how many turns for stock (sorry for the dumb question but my motor insn't turning at this time and i don't want to grow muscles trying to do it w/o p/s :)

1.5 would be crazy fast, most are about 2.7 to 3.2 turns lock to lock.  I think the OP was thinking about what it takes to center the steering wheel.

Yup, I meant 3 turns lock to lock.
Thanks!

3 3/8 turns lock to lock.  The Durango is 2 15/16 which is why he said it's 3 turns lock to lock.  The snowplow package Durango should be 3 3/8 also.

It seems to be a little beefier than the stock boxes Jeeps came with. It had a bigger bore.
To adjust your drag link just loosen the TRE assembly on one side and twist the TRE to shorten to your desired length, then re-tighten.

For me, it was also newer/lower mileage.
I just wheeled with it last weekend, and it is pretty nice to have quick steering on the tight stuff.

ok thanks, is the adjustment to the drag link just to correct the steering wheel position?

Has anyone had a leak after going to the Durango box?

I installed a Durango box with no leaks.  Also helps to install a cooler on the low pressure side, especially if you have a front locker.

my box has been leaking for a while now, but all of a sudden it doesn't leak anymore if so very little, now the hose gets real freaking hot, and i still have power steering? im swapping out the box this weekend, but am wondering if i should swap out the ps pump as well? are the hoses getting hot from ps pump not circulating properly or is it a result from box being bad?

The pump is probably bad in that case. If you run a power steering pump with low/no fluid in it, they will go bad.

If you don't the lock to lock will not be the same for both directions. Adjusting the DL will make it the same for both directions.

well i installed the durango box last night, it was a pain with the 2.5 radiator assembly in the way, but i got it in finally. i was wondering how yalls steering felt after the install, mine is quite a bit stiffer, not sure if im just used to all the slack the old one had due to bad seal for so long or what. my pump is making some wining now so i guess ill go pick up another one and see how it does after that. also im gonna have to order the pressure line, but was wondering if its just rubber crimped onto hydrolic line, just wondering if they can get crimped because when ever i take pump off engine for work i always kinda twist it around and set it aside? thanks

i got the power steering pump in and no more whining all the time, except for when the wheels are all the way lock to lock it makes a nasty whining noise, does anyone elses? do i need to adjust the stops or something, was kinda thinking maybe the wheels going beyond what they're supposed to, not sure? just wanted to see what others was doing. thanks

you can hear mine too but not really whining, but yeah it does make noise when it's at the end. Even if you adjust the bumpstops it will be the same deal - basically your pump goes under load when you are trying to steer and there's nowhere to go from there. not sure about the chrysler pump but some pumps have an over pressure valve that is adjustable, so the less pressure the less is the noise, the downside is that it will "help" you less if you are against an obstacle.

I was concerned with the issue of three bolts vs four bolts.  This seemed like it would place 33% more strain on the remaining 3 bolt holes (increasing the chance of frame cracking) vs the original configuration (on a YJ).  Now I'm less worried.  The YJ has a mount that is attached with four bolts, two on the bottom and two that also screw into the steering box mounting tabs.  With a Durango or TJ box, it looks like the mount can still be attached with four bolts although the box will attach with three (two into the mount and one through the frame).  Since the same four bolts go through the frame, this means that the strain on the frame is still about the same.  There will be more strain on the three box mounting bolts and on the mount but the frame will be just as well off as before.  So, bottom line, you may increase the chance that the mount or the bolts will need to be replaced down the road but this is a lot cheaper and less serious than fixing the frame.  Just make sure you use the four bolts to attach the mount to the frame.

Glad I got this off my chest!
