To swap an auto tranny for the 5 spd. in an '01 TJ? Besides the obvious, like the transmission, shifter, console, etc., what all would I need to do it? Would the drivelines need to be modified? Will the current transfer case bolt right up? What auto would be easiest to use?
I did it 25 years ago in my FJ40, but that was in conjunction with the V8 swap. I'm sure this wouldn't be as easy.

You'll need two driveshafts from the donor. You'll also need the pedals and you might as well get the steering column to get rid of the shifter. The input shaft on the transfer case will also need to be changed. Master cylinder, tubing, bellhousing, clutch, flywheel, pilot bearing, pressure plate...
So yes it can be done but you're replacing a lot of parts.

if you're interested i have an AX-5 and both driveshafts. the 3rd synchro is acting up (need to shift carefully), otherwise works fine - less than 100K miles on it.
EDIT: Just reading what you need from Jeffy's post - it has the bellhousing on it and i also have the t-case and can trade with your's if you want (or the input shaft but i have no idea what's involved in taking it out).

I know this sounds crazy, but you guys have it backwards. I am contemplating pulling out the 5 spd. and replacing it with an auto. Not for me, but for my daughter, since it looks like this will be her daily driver. While she is getting better with the stick, an auto would be just one less thing for her to have to think about.

I think it would be a lot easier and cheaper to teach her how to drive the stick. Once you get some practice in, it's not much to think about.

By far the cheapest option is to just let her learn to drive the stick, otherwise it'd probably be cheaper and easier to sell the existing Jeep and buy an auto instead of trying to convert the one you have.

Cheaper and easier aren't necessarily the main concerns here, and I can't replace the jeep for what I have in to it.

pretty much backwards what Jeffy said.
Auto-tranny, flywheel and t/c, t-case or input shaft swapped, front/rear d/shafts, steering column/pedals/shifter and you'll need a tranny cooler if your rad does not have one + the hoses for that. the tranny mount i think is also different. I am not sure if the starter is the same (i would think it is but just guessing)
that's all i can think of, the guys with an auto can probably confirm or add to this.

Everything I said minus the bellhousing and clutch. It's basically the same whether you go one way or the other. I think you'd be better off teaching her to drive a manual transmission though. The Jeep's clutch and transmission is fairly robust and as long as she's not riding the clutch, it's an easy vehicle to learn on. Not to mention, she will be able to drive a manual later in life and won't be limited to driving auto's. She'll also have a harder time talking on the phone, texting and doing other things other then driving.

I agree...teach her the stick shift. A good life lesson indeed. Once she figures it out, she'll never think about it after a while and she'll always be able to do it. Then and only then will she be able to drive, text, play with the radio, do her make-up, talk on the phone, eat a sandwich, you get my point....shifting will not be that much more of a hassle, seeing that she's probably already a master a multi-tasking.

Don't forget the wiring harness for the transmission and the Automatic ECU for the engine depending on the year and such...
