So I put in my lift and it took a Friday night and some of Saturday. The installation of the kit went smooth with the exception of a few bolts that refused to come off but some PB Blast and wrench finesse took care of that. I took the 3" body lift off and left the track bars off too. The ride is 100% better from what it once was with the shackle/body lift from the previous owner. I will get some pics up as soon as I can of the before and after. The one mistake I did make was breaking the banjo bolt off in the caliper ( didn't hear or feel the torque wrench click) and that was a hassle. For those who don't know, you can't get a banjo bolt from Monument or Kragen so I had to order it from the dealership in Dublin and I got it on Tuesday. So I reinstalled my brake lines, bled the system and it was all good from there. One thing I did notice from the previous owner was that he ran the exhaust pipe through the rear passenger side shackle... never seen that before so I had to saw that off. I just thought it was a strange way to run your exhaust pipe. Once I get a new exhaust system I'm just going to have a knock down around the center of the body so its totally free and clear of everything.

Pics of body lift and shackles from previous owner. Notice the exhaust going through the shackle.

Looks a lot better without the ghetto shackles and body lift. How tight did you do the shackle bolts? If you have nylock nuts you can drop the torque down to 45-ish without worrying about them coming undone. This sill make sure the suspension is able to flex when necessary. Also, you'll want to recheck and maybe loosen then torque the shackle and spring hanger bolts to make sure there isn't any preload on the suspension. This would cause for a harsh ride.
So was this last Friday and Saturday or are you somehow in the future as it's not even Saturday yet?
-
haha. I tried the future thing and it wasn't for me so I came back. Yeah, it was last Fri and Sat. The Shackles are torqued to 50 all around. Thats a good idea with the nylocks, I'm going to grab some on Sunday and throw them on. I've checked all the bolts like 10 times already out of sheer paranoia... kind of a ( I think I left the stove on, I'd better go back and check) OCD thing. I seem to be getting a wierd wobble thing going sometimes now... Like the whole front of the drivetrain is shaking.... shifter, clutch pedal, steering wheel, gas and brake pedals all start wobbling then it goes away and comes back after a while. It doesn't last long but would you have any ideas on what it might be?
-
those are the most ridiculous shackles i have ever seen
looks much better without that body lift too.
-
Thanks man, I'm really happy on how it turned out.... and yes, Those shackles were insanely, ridiculously, absloutely, positively, no question about it stupid. I'm not too sure what the guy was thinking but they're gone now and i feel much better about it. It was actually pretty embarassing driving around with that set up on it. When I took the lift blocks out they were all full of sand so I guess he just took it on the beach once in a while and thats about it.

A great improvement from the shackles and body lift. I was going to go with a BDS lift (when the time and money are right), but I'm going to go SOA instead.

Hmm, a wobble? Well, if you're trackbar is off you might have some bumpsteer which would affect the steering. I don't think you would have death wobble since you have a new suspension. Maybe you have some minor driveshaft vibration. It would probably go away once you get some mileage on the leafs and the ride height settles in. You can try cycling it a bit my jumping on the front end a few times.
Maybe you're just not used to having some caster on the front axle.

should the shackles not be the other way ?

should the shackles not be the other way ?
i don't think it matters in this case, but you're right i seen them have the elbow pointing inwards
-
Looks much better N8! Now you need to ditch those chrome tube bumpers :wall:
-
Thanks bud. The bumpers get replaced next week. I'm getting the rock crusher front and rear. pretty stoked on it.

they go the other way because in theory is to have the shackle sit against the frame and get the most out of your springs

Looks 1000% better....not that anyone was probably laughing at you (at least not to your face...) :gimp:

Thanks, Oh, I'm sure they were laughing... I would have been.... In fact I used to everytime I looked at it but now its fixed so I'm happy. A guy I work with just bought a 2wd Chevy 1500 and spend some serious loot on a 6" RCD lift with those KMC Rockstar rims with the Nitto Grappler tires and I laugh at that. He's also getting this ridiculous grill made by No Fear with pistols and stars and skulls all over it. ha! Talk about a useless, expensive rig.

It looks great! Time to get it out on some rocks.

I can't wait to man. I still have to regear my axles and get lockers though. I keep fumbling on the decision and its driving me nuts. So far it looks like D44's front and rear with 4.88's and start with an ARB in the rear. I was just going to regear and get lockers for the stock axles but then realized that I shouldn't dump a bunch of loot into axles I'm eventually going to swap anyways.
I keep seeing these D44 axle bodies on craigslist. Is it a good idea to buy one and just build it as I get cash or wait and just buy a built up axle flat out and talk one of you gentlemen into giving me a hand putting it in? I rally don't know much about swapping gears, installing lockers or setting the new perches. Some people say that it's easy but it seems like a PIA to me.

You will want to buy complete axles. I wouldn't trust a bare housing on cragslist. You don't know if it has problems until you build it and then, you've wasted more money and time. You can't tell if the housing leaks or if it has spin bearing surfaces, etc...
Check on pirate4x4.com and watch for someone dumping their axles for larger ones. Otherwise, you could to Salvage Yard hunting. There are some in Hayward and Concord. If you go let me know and I might go.
If you have all of the tools it's easy(er). If not then it can be a PITA.

Go lower than 4.88's if your gonna do D44's. I say 5.38's.

He's on 33's though. If he's staying on 33's then 5.13's would be fine.
-
I think that I would be able to run 35's with the set up I have now but I'm not 100% positive. I don't want to buy them and then have them not fit so for now I'll stick with the 33's until I can find some cheap used 35's and try them out.
-
With the amount of lift you have 35's should fit. If they rub a bit then open the rear wheel wells a bit. There is plenty of room to open them up. Plus it's free.
-
I was thinking maybe I should regear before I go to 35's anyways. In anyones experience how does a virtually stock 2.5 YJ push 35's?
-
35's will fit but you won't have the huge fender gap. I know my suspension is pretty low for my 35's. If you do need more lift you can always cut your old body lift and make some 1"-1.5" pucks. Although I doubt that will be necessary. The only place you might rub is at the rear fender opening and you can trim that or else extend the bumpstop so it's not rubbing.
For 35's you'll really want 5.38:1 gears though. I drive around with 4.56's but it's not optimal.
-
Mine rubs in front (right at the top of the arch) with 33s on some obstacles. In back it rubs quite a bit at the back of the opening. The best fix would be to trim the fenders to make sure you get as much compression as possible and then extend the bumpstops, and avoid the body lift (my body attachment points are deteriorating as it is!).
