Title: Stupid Jeep, Part 23
Post by: Mozman68 on January 16, 2011, 09:19:45 PM
Grrrrrr....went on a nice two track run in the snow yesterday.....seemed to be having some pressure from the front end, thought it might be a wheel bearing...still not sure.  Wouldn't stay in 4WD very well, so I did 99% of the run in 2WD...linkage must need adjusting.   And then, driving to a club dinner last night, the Jeep starting making a nice short burst of screeching when I would accelerate.  Drove home on back roads so I didn't have to go above 35 or 40 mph.  Was shifting at around 1500 rpm to keep things as low as possible.  It helped.  Thinking it may be a drive shaft bearing.

Buddy is coming tomorrow with trailer to take it back to his garage for the once over....oh joy.... :'(

If keeping the engine RPMs down helps, I'd lean toward a slipping serpentine belt or a bearing going out in one of the belt-driven components (usually idler pulley or alternator).

hmmmm...t-case was cracked open...no oil...none in my garage....guess it's all over the highway somewhere......unfortunately, output shaft on my extreme short sye needs to be replaced.  Going to go ahead and just get a new kit since they charge almost as much for a replacement shaft as the entire kit costs....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Yeah, that would cause some problems.  I know I have oil in mine from the drips.

Sounds like my old Bug:  oil drips, no problem... no oil dripping, it's empty.

Mine never dripped....decided to switch from the TerFlex extreme short sye to the JB Conversion Super Short just in case that was where the issue was....wanted the JB Conversion unit in the first place.  Seems like a better unit based on the comparison they do with the Terflex unit on their web page.  Will be nice to have an off the shelf Rubicon speed sensor in there now...wonder if my speedo will suddenly start working after this is fixed??  Maybe the tone ring was the problem??

I would agree with JB's junk being night and day better than Tera's junk.
Now just slap a 4:1 Klune in front of the 231 and call it good. It would stand up to that mythical hemi.

Hah...I just sent an email to HPA asking when their TJ TDI conversion will be available.....would love the mileage...would prefer more power...LOVE the fact that no one else within 1,000 miles would have it (I need to be special....)

Being special is good and bad. Not having someone else with knowledge or spare parts is bad. Everything else is good.

An oil burner would be   :smokes:

Well...went to pick up the Jeep yesterday...put it in gear and it didn't move.  That's when we realized that in his haste to get it back in, he forgot to use my output shaft from my old t-case in place if the 4.0L one that was in the one we swapped in.  Apparantly, different spline counts mean the transmission won't really connect with the t-case...

No big deal...easy swap and going to pick it up this morning.

Other good news...since I was dropped off there by a co-worker, my mechanic loaned me his daughter's 1998 XJ Classic to get home and back....and it's for sale....I think I may have found my third vehicle.

231k on the odometer, but he fixed it up with a new alternator, brakes, tune-up...ran great on the way home....just needs some minor body fixes.   It was nice being in a Jeep and having the 4.0 on the freeway.

For $1500, not sure I can pass it up...it's a Jeep, has 4WD and works....and I couldn't find another one comparable to it for less than $2,100.

I'll decide this week when I get back from NYC.

was the engine o/hauled - if not you'll need one soon (231k is quite a bit).

Have had the Jeep back for almost a week now and it is running great. Speedo is working again....just need to wire in the pulse modulator to the new speed sensor to correct the speed...too cold out to do it now.

I you are considering an SYE, go with JB Conversions...I think the TeraFlex one may have been where my failure occured.
