Optima Batteries
« on: March 04, 2006, 08:14:02 AM »
My Jeep went dead on me last week, I need a new battery.
I would like to upgrade to a Optima battery for safety,
and I will be adding a winch in the future.
When I went to the Optima web site it said they don't
make one for a 95 YJ.
Did some investigating and as near as I can tell I want to get
the D34/78 Yellow Top. This one has the dual terminals
where I could hook the winch directly to the battery.
Has anyone installed this setup and will the stock tie down work?

R.E. 4" STD., 33-10.50 BFG KO2's on stock rims.

I'm running a red top Optima, with the dual terminals...  It'll fit, so ignore the books on this one.

Also, with enought enginuity you could stand two Optima's up on their side, right next to each other.  On a 2.5L YJ it seems pretty easy.  Wranger Product NW has a beautiful wiring kit (if you don't want to get into something like that yourself).

The following diagram shows how two batteries would be connected together using just an isolator.  This is similar to the system I used, except my isolator is wired through a switch on the dash and powered through the fuse box instead of the coil.

This is a PARALLEL configuration - where both like terminals are connected.  In between the two POSITIVE (+) wires, you can place a simple battery ISOLATOR.  The isolator is then patched into the coil.  The job of the isolator is to monitor the drain of both batteries, and recharge whichever battery that needs it the most (so it automatically switches back and forth).  I believe in this configuration, the amperage of both batteries is always present in the system, and both batteries are always being used.  Thus, if you drained your system, you would have drained both batteries!   Even though there would be two batteries under the hood, you would not have a "back-up" battery if you needed it.  That's the added advantage of the Battery Manager System I installed; as you can switch off the dual battery mode when you don't need it and keep one battery in reserve.

The most common red top is the 800U.  The newer one is a bit smaller though.  Basically, there is really only one size of Optima's.  So either it first or you make it fit.  I've got a older red top.  Great battery.  It fits in the YJ's tray and you can use the stock tie-down.  Personally, unless you're going to be using the battery till it's almost drained, there is no real point in getting a yellow or blue.  They are Deep-cycle and will take cycles of completely drained, better then the red tops.  This would most likely mean your engine's dead and no one else has a winch.  You'll probably want to upgrade the alternator before going with a dual setup.  You might find you don't even need a dual setup.  Oh and when you do setup a dual battermy, you really want them to be of the same age.

Also, you can wire them up two different ways.  One's in serial while the other is in parallel.  You can also have them wired so the second battery isn't used unless you switch to it.  You have A, B, or A/B as your options.

As for the terminals, it is recommended not to attach the winch cables to the side terminals.  (Although many do.) The reason not so is that the high amp draw (like when winching under a heavy load) will cause the terminal plates to heat up and melt.  The side terminals use a strip of metal that connects to the top terminals.

In any case, the Optima's are good batteries.  You'll notice how the started will sound different also.  I believe the stock battery is a 400-500CCA while the Optima is a 800CCA

Will they withstand leaving the parking lights on all day at work? I did that twice and a stock size Exide, fairly new, '95 YJ, died on me, had to jump it both times.  Was wondering if the red top would do better?

The red top will withstand a few drain cycles but not if it's it happens a lot.

I suggest getting a light buzzer.

The yellow and bluetop deepcycle starting batteries will give you everything you need in one package.  They'll be able to withstand the discharge cycles (500+) without hampering performance.

I use the Bluetop D34M, it's a deepcycle starting battery that is good for winching and all around use.  Has an extra set of stainless top posts for accessories or winch hookup.

Ive got the Yeller' Top, no issues, I have the factory alternator but I only use my winch but once/twice a year and most of the time its when one of my buddies gets stuck!   Most people upgrade the alternator but they are also rich.
