Looking for a guide for swapping the nv 3550 in for the ax-5
« on: October 15, 2006, 08:44:18 PM »
My ax-5 took a dump on my for the second time in 5 years so I've decided to ditch it for a heavier duty tranny.  I'm pursuing the nv 3550.  It will be able to handle a 4.0 if and when I swap one in down the road and is suppossedly not too difficult to mate up to the 2.5L
I know you need the bell housing out of a '96-'98 2.5L Dakota, a clutch disk out of an '84 4 cylinder camaro (not positive on exactly what parts of the clutch system I need), and a pilot bushing (?) from an NV 4550.

My dilema is that I'm not familiar with transmission work... I've dont lift installs on YJ's, TJ's, and XJ's, engine mods, etc... but am having a family member do the transmission.  I can't leave him to do all the research, he helps me out enough given his small amount of free time.  I am looking for a guide written by someone who has done this swap before that shows step by step what they did and what they used... there's a lot of one paragraph "you use this, this, and that" but no guide.... Before you flame and tell me to research, I have... about 5 hrs on various forums (POR, 4banger, maryland creepers, JU, etc.) and google.

Thanks in advance

There are several thread on this.

From what I've seen you don't need a Camaro clutch although many use them.  High Angle Driveline sells a kit.

Yea, i had found many threads on other sites but no actual right ups... such as those found for SOA for flat-top knuckles.  I did find the high-angle driveline sight after posting originally, looks good but i'd simply feel better finding a full write up.  Again I'm having a family member do this and don't want to have to stop in the middle because we missed something or have to re-work things... he's busy enough, has a built muscle car in his garage collecting dust cuz he can't take the time to finish restoring it... I just don't want to waste his time; otherwise I wouldn't have taken up people's time asking about it.

I haven't found anyone with a actual writeup.  There is a thread on POR but again it's just a thread where someone did teh swap and not a step by step How-to.  I'd like to see one done but I'm probably going to have to do one and I'm not in need of a new transmission.
