Total Rewire?
« on: March 22, 2012, 11:21:27 PM »
People, I've noticed a few ambitious projects on these boards, but I was wondering if anyone ever did a total rewire? I just picked up a '49 CJ2A and EVERYTHING WORKS. The only body piece missing is the tailgate. Noooooo problem. The wiring however is 'crusty'. Seems like anytime I want to move a wire, a little piece of insulation wants to flake off. Has anyone everdone a rewire? What is the best or easiest kit to use? The only thing I've ever done like this was a Myers Manx Dune Buggy back in the '70s. I was much more flexible then.   Any thoughts?   Jim

The wiring in my ex '43 GPW was extremely simple, the CJ-2A is probably even simpler without the military gadgets involved.  I would recommend just taking out one or a few wires at a time and replacing them with new wire.

for how few electronics the flat fenders have its amazing how man wires and how much of a mess you can make behind the dash. we haven't totally rewired ours but we have rewired most of it bit by bit. if you have the time and patience it would be nice to do it all at 1 time and not have to chase electrical problems time and time again. I haven't seem a electrical kit for a cj2-a but then again I've never looked.

It wouldn't be that hard to rewire it but you'll have might have to salvage the connectors which can be a pain to do.  If the insulation is suspect then it's a good idea to replace it.  You don't want an electrical fire.  I'd bite the bullet and get a complete kit.

Here's one place that makes a wiring kit.  I'm sure there are more but I haven't looked.

I use painless wiring kits unless I'm really strapped for cash, they are nice and have everything labeled...
