ax 5 ax 15 tranny oil
« on: May 23, 2012, 08:17:12 AM »
In our club we have a die hard YJ guy with a 2.5 too. We were talking about oils and gear oil in the tranny. He said I should be using 10w30 engine oil in my tranny. He said Chrysler recommends this. He said its because the engine oil doesn't have sulfur in it like gear oil. It's also the same thickness as 75w90.

Has anyone heard or do this?

I think I found my own answer. 10w30 is ok as long as it is a synthetic. But gl3 or gl4 75w90 gear oil is best.  It all has to do with the wear of the brass syncros.

GL5 is fine as well as long as it has the MT1 designation.

If you read a hundred threads on it, people claim Redline MT90 is the best stuff going for the ax-5 ax-15, clears up cold shifting issues and etc.

Whatever you do, don't flush you transmission out with brake cleaner. It doesn't do much for the bearings on a M5OD-R1.  :koolaid:

Not gonna say how I know this.
