Dana 44 Housing
« on: April 01, 2006, 11:06:27 AM »
I am picking up a Dana 44 empty housing that will bolt right into my TJ.  What parts will I need to buy in addition to the housing?

Ring and Pinion
Axle Shafts
Carrier(locker)
Master Install kit includes what?  Does the master installl give all required bearings.
Gear Oil

What else is needed?   I don't know how to set up axle, is there a lot of work I can do before dropping it off at a axle shop to save money?   I was planning on using my old brakes.   Thanks guys.

Starting from the outside:

Drums  x2
Brake hardware (springs & alignment pins) x2
Brake cylinders x2
Backing plate x2
Brake shoes x2
axle shafts x2
axle shaft retainer plates x2
axle shaft seal x2
axle shaft bearing x2
Carrier (side gears, thrust washers, spider gears) or Locker
Ring & Pinion gears
Master Install kit (shims, washers, pinion bearing, ring gear bolts, pinion seal, pinion nut and washer,  maybe carrier bearings.)
Carrier Bearings x2
Pinion Yoke
Differential cover

Some other misc stuff would be the brake hardline, diff cover, bereather line and carrier bearing caps.  The caps need to match the housing.

Your D35c brakes can be reused since the TJ D44 isn't a true D44 but more like a D35/44 hybrid.  Although larger brakes would be better.  Most XJ D44's have 10x2.5" drums while full-size use 11x2.5" drums.  Stock TJ brakes are 9x2.5".

Just give the installer the bearing housing, and the Master Install kit, carrier, R&P, Yoke, etc...  You don't need to load brakes on there or the shafts.  It's easier to move the housing around if you don't strap more weight to them at this point.

When buying axle shafts you can buy them loaded.  Meaning they come with seals, retainer plates and bearings.  They may even install them for you for an extra $10 which means you can drop them in without having to get someone to press the bearings on.  I'd probably go ahead and but HD shafts since they're usually only $20 more.
