Topic: AX-5 Fill Plug - Inverted??? Very different configuration of what I have read

Hi guys.

I have a 98 TJ but I swapped the 30RH with a Ax-5 (supposedly from a 1993 YJ). This work has performed by a shop owned by a friend of mine.

Anyways the thing is that I want to change the GL5 140 gear oil he used with REDLINE MT90. :)

I read a lots of posts in different forums, including this one, regarding which plug is which, and do do not remove certain plugs. Perfect.

So far, everybody says that the fill plug is a bolt in the passanger side, and that in the drive side is an ALLEN BOLT. THat shouldnt be removed.

My transmission has an ALLEN Bolt in the PASSANGER SIDE, and a regular bolt in the DRIVER SIDE. Its inverted of what everybody says.

It's possible that my transmission is old like 91-92 or something and that setup is inverted? which should be the correct fill plug and which not to remove.

I called him and he said that he thinks that its in the passanger side. But when I mentioned the setup, he said that the one is the one similar to the drain plug (regular socket bolt). That no matter were it is, its that one. that I Shouldnt remove the allen one, because it holds internal parts of the transmission.

I am very confused and scared because, that means I need to remove the one in the driver side, agaisnt everything I have read.

I questioned him , about the possibilty that he inverted bolts when assembling, and he told me that the bolts are different, and there's no way to invert them, because they wouldnt fit or do the work they are supposed to do (hold internal parts etc).

Does anybody have any idea?

Strange.  The AX-15 has the fill plug on the driver side not the AX-5 though.  The hex nut on your AX-5 is usually a inverted Torx that says DO NOT REMOVE.  Although I don't think there's anything wrong if you remove it.  Nothing shoots out or falls off. Strange.  The AX-15 has the fill plug on the passenger side not the AX-5 though.

Looks like somebody just put the plugs back in different places.

That's what I think since the AX-15 has the plug in the other locations.

this pic shows an empty hole, i wonder if this used to be the AX4 fill plug and for AX5 they raised the level



just speculating of course, but that empty hole is somewhat hinting at that.

The "do not remove" plug is lower than the fill plug on the AX5.  Maybe they put "do not remove" on that plug just so that the oil doesn't pour out.
