Topic: So many questions...

Hi all.  I'm new here, and am full of questions.  I've checked the faqs, and done a few searches, but haven't found what I need yet, so here goes..
I have a '98 TJ that needs to get some more ponies, as well as get caught up on some maintenence I've neglected.

My windsheild wipers don't work on high anymore, and move slow on low.  They do speed up on low eventually, but somethings amiss.  When on high, they just stop right where they were.  Is the motor bad, or is the relay?

Next question is about the TB swap.  I got ahold of a 4.0 TB from a salvage yard, but it came out of a '97 Cherokee.  The people at the salvage yard said that they (the TBs) list as being the same.  Will I have problems with the sensor positions?  Will it work at all?

Also, it came with a soft top, but I baught a used factory hard top.  The new top doesn't have a rear window.  It's got a nice thick peice of plexiglass instead.  How much should I expect to shell out for a real window?  And when I do, does a factory soft top vehicle have the wiring for the rear wiper and defrost?  I know it doesn't have the switches, but is the wiring there to install them?

And finally, when I take off from a dead start the Jeep bogs down.  It goes away once I'm moving though.  Most of the time.  Ideas?

as for the wiper motor sounds like the motor but i'd check all the connections first

as far as the window for the hard top. retail they are pretty expensive but ive had good luck finding some cheap on diff message boards and bargain news type papers, for a far better price for the whole top

My first guess on the wiper is the control switch in the column migth be on the fritz.  There isn't much in the wiper motor is pretty basic.  Not much to go wrong there.  It's a 3 wire setup.  Although you could always put 12v on each lead to see if it works in both speeds.

The only problem will be with the extra hole for the MAP sensor.  You can plug that hole with a cap though.

Does the hardtop lift gate have the fiberglass bottom piece?  Most of the time when the rear glass is removed, they leave that piece off for some reason.

my hard top has a 3"wide piece of fiberglass on the bottom of the rear glass. The wiper is fairly ineffective on mine..but since I never replaced the rearview mirror it does not bother me that much. The wiring is fairly easy to spot it runs along the drivers side inside wall of the tub in my 95YJ. I have not had a reason to turn on the defroster this winter. We had a pretty mild one in chicago this year. I cant wait to get the soft top on. I am waiting for the average temp to get toward the 60s first. Did you just get the TJ...If so congats and welcome to the addiction

Uh first...  I'll check the motor leads to see whats the deal there.  Thanks. :)

I'm not sure if I wanna use the TB or if I wanna send it in as a core for a pretty machined  one.  Knowing me, I'll just use this one and plug the extra dealie.  I still have to get a spacer anyway, so I have time on that.

The plexi-window is just a big thick piece with holes for the gas struts.  The window isn't heavy enough to push it down (without risk of breaking it) the struts, so I don't open it much.  It doesn't have any other parts to it other than the plexi, and struts.  I'm not sure what's supposed to be there really.  I should go test drive a new one to see.

I did look on either side of the tub when I got the "new" top, and didn't see anything.  I have the feeling that I'll have to purchase a wiring kit.  It's not a big deal though, since I'll probably just run the home-brew window for a while anyway.

And finally, no I've had my Jeep for just about five years now.  One and a half more payments and she's mine!!!  That's why I'm able to start doing projects on it.  The old payments will go towards the new parts.  Except for the used hardtop I got.  My old soft top was rotting off of it, and I didn't think it would make another Green Bay winter.  Of course, if I'd have known what a mild winter we were in for, I'd have held out for a top with a real window. :)

Oh wait, if you've got a TJ then it won't have anything else other then the glass and I think a gasket that skips on at the bottom.

You can still buy harnesses but they're around $150.
