White Flag of Defeat...
« on: April 03, 2006, 03:57:40 PM »
Well, I've given up.  Remember that bracket idea I had for mounting my GPS to the dash a month ago?  Well, that's all been for nothing.  The idea was to make a cheap little bracket that would bolt behind all the plastic and give a nice platform for mounting my GPS on.  That was the plan.  Spend a day taking apart the dash to get measurements and make a mock up in cardboard.  Then spent a few more weeks thinking about other dash designs that would look cool.  Drove around with no gauges for a while too.  Well, it was all for nothing.

While on a recent trip to Circuit city for there sale on DVD-R's, I started to just browse.  Checked out the Digital Camera's, Laptops, DVD's and LCD Flat screens.  Man, those things are cool.  I'd love to have a 50" HDTV flat screen in the bedroom.  It would be like Fahrenheit 157.  I'd need to get 4 of them though at they aren't cheap.

I don't really like going to the car audio area since they always have the bass cranked way too high.  Well this time their rooms were down so it was quiet for once.  Looked at the Alarms since mine is on the fritz right now.  Also looked at the GPS's.  They always keep a small stock of Garmin's there.

Recently Garmin has changed their line up with many models being discontinued.  Not to mention, more people want GPS's like the Tom Tom's and StreetMap's.  They always had a small section of etrek's.   Usually a basic etrek and a legend, both discontinued.  They also had some accessories there.  With both of the GPS's going out they needed to get rid of the accessories.

So to make a long story longer, they had an Etrek surface mount bracket for $4.95.  When I went to buy it it was $3.96.  So now it sits on my dash.  I was afraid that the adhesive would come off but after cleaning the dash with alcohol, it stuck like glue.

Pictures to come...  well, now sure when that's going to happen since my fancy DSLR is being sent in to get fixed.  I've got a P&S here someplace though.

I think it's pretty cool that you went to the trouble to get it done yourself.  That's half the fun of a Jeep.  To me anyway...
And at least things worked out right? :)

I've got the pattern but never went to buy the metal.  Basically the mount bolts to the underside of the dash then squeaks out between the plastic and gives you a mounting surface in front of the first small gauge.

For $4 though, it wasn't worth it to make the piece.  Not to mention, it's a little low.  I still might make one and use it for my iPod though.

Where's that <Ban User> button...

I've used some 3M stuff in that past that was supposed to be perminant but it just pealed off after a while.   I was impressed that the stuff stuck to the textured dash so well.  But then I haven't driven anywhere with it yet either.  My Jeep vibrates a lot with poly engine mounts.  I want to seap them out for stockers soon.

Well see...  after all that time, effort, hard work and luckily no money, the store had exactly what you needed.  And at a smokin deal too...

As I drive my Jeep I dream of having a laptop mount.  One that sets a laptop just to the right of the shifter, kinda like the police have...

Then it occured to me...  I don't own a laptop...  I put the laptop idea to rest...

A laptop is nice BUT if you're wheeling anything semihardcore, it will take a beating.  RAM makes laptop mounts.

I drove around and the mount stuck.  It did vibrate a bit though.  I think I need to move the mount forward which is going to be a PITA, I think.  That seam in the dash makes the mount sit uneven and 1/4" of it isn't in contact with the pad.

I'd like to see a pic of your whole dash with all these fancy gadgets.....mine just has a BlackBerry holder (from ProClip USA).  I need it as it is also my phone and I couldn't talk and shift at the same time.

2009 Audi S5....what....its 4wd...sort of....

I have an eTrex Vista.  I use the R-A-M suction cup mount.  The nice thing is that I can transfer the mount easily between the boat, the Chevy, and the Jeep.  Mostly, the mount stays in the boat.  The suction cup stays stuck for months at a time in both hot and cold.  I highly recommend it.  :)
