Transfer Case
« on: December 18, 2015, 08:21:38 AM »
Had a question.
While the Jeep is down, thinking of rebuilding the transfer case.
Getting a fair amount of chain slap when wheeling.
I have swapped in TJ axle shafts in the front which makes the T.C. turn 100% of time.
Are their any differences between the YJ and TJ T.C.'s that I should upgrade to?

The Yj and Tj have different slip yokes.  I think the Yj will allow a slightly longer rear drive shaft but will leak if you have to remove the driveshaft on the trail.

I have a CV d.s. both front and rear.
Just wondering if there was a difference now that it is turning 100% of the time.

YJ's weren't designed to run in 4WD at speeds faster then 50 MPH. YJ's didn't have CV shafts and don't really need them since the shaft is so long the angle is pretty minimal especially since it had a high-pinion. To run a CV shaft you'd need to point the pinion at the transfer case but doing this will screw up the caster.  Otherwise, you start running out of phase.

As for the transfer case itself.  The TJ's have a better range shift selector which gives them true neutral.  That's about the only thing better.

What Jeffy said in the above post is correct.
But my D30 with the 4" lift did not line up right for a standard D.S.
In fact it was closer to running a C.V. Shaft.
Had my stock D.S. checked out and balanced, but still had vibration.
I don't know why other than it's a 1995 built to 1996 spec. ( The TJ runs a C.V. Shaft )
I wound up running  1 deg. shim in front with a C.V shaft and the vibrations went away.
