Topic: New Alternator - What Amp????

First time on the forum since joining - greetings to all.

I have a '99 TJ with the mandatory 4-banger. Started it this past weekend and all heck broke loose. Turns out that the alternator seized which ultimately led to a destroyed serpentine belt.

Now I have some quick questions:
1. I see that there are many options for different amps out there. Thoughts on what makes the most sense?
2. It doesn't seem like it should be hard to replace the alternator and belt. Am I wrong?
3. Any harm in running the Jeep just long enough to get it in the garage?

That's it...any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I replaced the one on my YJ last winter and I’m running the stock amperage one. It only really matters if you’re running lots of accessories like lights, winches, air compressors, a big stereo system. Changing it wasn’t difficult, the worst part was loosening the tension on the belt. There’s two or three bolts that have to be loosened on the power steering pump bracket and there’s a long bolt on the fender side of the pump that sets the tension. As for starting it, it should be fine. The cooling system is full of water, so that helps keep it from getting hot, but best not to run it for longer than you have to.

Stock is probably 75amp.  90 amp is the option but I'd go with a 136 amp minimum.

You'll be fine driving the Jeep without a belt into your garage.  Keep in mind the water pump isn't turning so if you're running it long it will overheat.

Replacing the alternator and belt is pretty easy.

Thanks all...I really appreciate the feedback. I plan to go with the 136A. I have some auxiliary lights and an upgraded stereo amp so I think it makes sense.

I hope to knock it out in the next couple of weekends so I can get back on the road.

Are all those Jeep alternators a direct bolt and wire up?

You have to look at the years.  For a '95, any Denso should work.  Read the following post to that thread.

Go to the link above.  You might also want to run a larger gauge positive wire to the battery.
