Hey everyone, this is my first post and I am also new to jeeps and fairly new to mechanics of engines, but want to learn. I just bought a 90 yj 4banger and have a few questions about the oil. I have a pretty good leak somewhere and it appears to be spraying towards the passenger side of the engine on the hoses and onto the wheel well. I cannot tell where it is coming from, hoses, oil filter, engine? where do I start to look. Also on top of my engine and along the sides almost all the way around there is a good coat of oil. Also what should the pressure run at and how do I check and remove the oil pressure sending unit. :?:  Is there anyone else here from Mississippi?  Thanks

valve cover gasket is probably leaking

oil fill cap is probably keaking as that's pretty common from what i've seen first hand

get a rag and the hose and blast the oil and crap off the engine.... make it kinda clean, and then check it every day or so.... should be able to spot it then

first, welcome. second wipe everything down to get eccess oil as clean as possible. then change your own oil and filter. all you need is a drain pan.  there is no excuse for not doing it yourself. I am a fairly big guy and I fit under nicely without having to jack anything up. when I bought my yj there was oil on the pass side of engine looked to be under dist cap and was all over starter from the bottom..I changed my oil and filter and wiped everything down. and the previous owner must have had the jiffy kids do his..b/c there was no leak obvious. they must have started car with the filter either not on or loose. It has been 1750 miles and I checked under their the other day and there was no sign of leaks..make sure you rub some new oil aroungd on the gasket when you install the filter....a clogged filter will cause odd pressure build ups in your motor as well...anyways I might not know that much but that is how I went about it with my YJ.

These are great hints...  things to look for...

Nothing that $5.00 at a sprayer car wash couldn't help you locate.  Like these guys are saying, spray it down and peek all around there.  A clean engine makes it easier to find the leak than a dirty engine.

Okay I cleaned it and noticed that most if not all of the oil is coming from the top of the engine, is this the valve cover? It is plastic and has the hole for the oil and pcv valve on it. What is the other valve besides the pcv. I had alot of oil coming out of my oil cap, and bought a new one but still have a little oil coming from that, Can i fix it?

First check your airbox and see if there is oil in there.  I believe one of the tubes is a fresh air vent that goes from the valve cover to the air box.  The other should have the PCV and go to the intake, I think.  (I'm not a TBI expert)  If you can check the lines to see if they're plugged.

Hopefully it's just a clogged line or bad PVC valve.  Worst case would be 'blow-by' and that wold mean piston valves on a high-mileage engine.

I noticed a similar thing on my Jeep.   On the top of the airbox lid there is a tube that runs to the valve cover.   Well I took that apart and blew as hard as I could through it.

Light brown spew came flying on out.  (Yukk!!)   I have no idea what it was and how it got built up in there.  But after a big hefty blow, it was all gone.

Give that a try...   It couldn't hurt!
