Speedometer gear help
« on: July 06, 2005, 05:01:20 PM »
I just put 4.88 gears and 31" tire on my 95YJ. I have found other web sites that say I need a 44 tooth speedometer gear. But I can't seem to find any. Dose anyone know where to get one. The dealer can't get them they say they are obsolete. I will be putting 33" tires on but that won't be for awhile. Can anyone help? Thanks

You might be able to use the stock speedometer gear.  It's a 41T.  Should be good enough.

Just make sure you know how many miles per hour you're doing and you'll be fine.

My stock gear is 34 tooth. I've found 41t but was told that I need to get a 44t to make it read right. The 41t is what's called for 4.88 and 33" tires. I have 4.88 and 31" tires.

On a chart, I like to use, I get 40T.  Was your Jeep an auto?  2.5L Manual should come with a 41T.  It takes some tweaking, using charts.  I'm running a 35T for 4.56's and 35's and my speedo's off 4mph at 70mph.

Yep, my stock speedogear was also 41T.  Went to 38T for the 31" tires and stock gearing and it's exact.  I've compared it to those "Your speed is..." signs that the cops here put.

I have a 95YJ with a 2.5 5 speed. It has 31" tires and the 4.88 gears are going in right now. Which one do you think I should start with.

I'd put the stock 41T in there and see how off it is.

I'm having the 4.88 installed right now and I will be going to the Rubicon on the 15th. Hope it all works out.

Gears are in speedo is off 11mph fast. I'll go and get a 41t gear and see how it works.
