SQUEEEEEEEEEEEK!!!!
« on: May 12, 2006, 07:46:07 AM »
Okay...so I had a really bad squeek develop during start-up about 6 weeks ago....goes away after about 10-15 seconds, but is louder than Hell!

I think I've narrowed it down to the alternator as I finally noticed that my battery gauge hovers below 14 during the squeek and moves up to normal position after the squeek is gone. (edit...also noticed yesterday that it squeeked when I turned the defroster on...alternator trying to pull??)

I've used STP belt dressing with limited success...so....I'm guessing I need to tighten the belt.

A new one was installed when I bought the Jeep 4 months ago.  I can't find the tightening bolt anywhere in the Hayes manual....it was mentioned on here before, so I think it sounds easy to adjust.....any info anyone can provide would be great as it is embarrassing every time I turn the ignition when it has sat for more than an hour.

Thanks.

Looks like the tensioner on a 00 (checked a '99 and '01) is on the P/S pump.  Unlike the YJ, the bolt is on the inside facing in.  What I mean is when looking at the engine, he's behind the fan, on the bottom left side of the P/S pump with the head facing towards teh passenger side.

It say's to first loosen the idler pulley bolt then adjust the tension.

I think I found the squeak....just above the alternator there is a wheel that says "clutch assist" on it.  It isn't engaged all the time, but squeeeks when it is....start-up...deforst/ac kicks in??

Again...doesn't squeek all of the time..only at start-up for about 10 seconds...louder than Hell...but does go away.

WD-40'd the crap out of the wheel, but didn't do much....may be time to have a mechanic look at it.

Don't use WD40, LOL.  The belt is squealing because it's a bit too loose.  Tighten the belt and the noise will go away.  It should take a whole 10 minutes to do.

I'm not that bright...but I didn't WD40 the belt...sprayed it on the pully joint as it seemed like that may be where the squeek was.

That bolt on the tensioning wheel is REALLY tight and I can't seem to loosen it....why is this such a pain?

There might be a lock nut on it.  I haven't looked at the FSM for a TJ though I'm assuming it has one like the YJ.  You will also need to loosen the P/S bracket.

Agree with Jeffy, it's the belt and stay away from WD ... even if you didn't spray it directly on the belt it is a very light weight oil and travels easily. Tension bolt does have a locknut.

The reason it squeals when the defroster is turned on is because the AC compressor is kicking in.  Supposedly this is a safety concept to help keep the windshield from cracking by blowing hot air onto a cold windshield.

On a TJ you have to loosen the bolt on the tensioner idler wheel first.  Then the adjustment bolt should move.  Mine was VERY hard to move and badly seized.  I sprayed it with penetrating oil and came back the next day.  It finally broke free but still turned really hard.

Thanks....where is the tensioner idler wheel??  The diagram on the Jeep itself only shows the one wheel (lower right and side) as being adjustable for the belt and Haynes doesn't seem to say anything about the process of getting the belt on (maybe it does...but that book is so damn confusing).

Anyone have pictures??

When my 94yj was squeeking like that, it turned out to be the water pump (I found out while driving down a freeway)
anyways it squeeked for about 3 months before the WP let go.
