Got back from a trip to some big mountains and some pretty good altitudes.  Due to high altitude of roads, I was spending a lot of time with the four in 2nd gear revving way out between 3500-4500 rpm so that when I upshifted to third, I would be above 2000 rpm (barely enough to hold speed on a steep hill

My jeep doesn't really burn oil and I've been using synthetic since about 65k (now 135k).  But, it appears that high-revving for any length of time will definitely cause you to go through a little oil, at least with my 4.  I had to add half a quart, twice, during my week trip.

Hmm, mine doesn't burn much oil even when I push it to >4000rpm.  But like you said, you'll have to rev it high so when you shift into the next gear, you'll be turning enough rpm's to get it into the powerband.  I loose between 1000-1500rpm's between shifts.

Considering the engine is turning twice as fast as you would normally be going and making a LOT more heat, it's normal for it to burn more oil.
