IIRC it's right about seat level... at least that's where I ride!

Anybody?

Roommates got an '88 with 31's on it.  The clearance between the tires and the wells seems pretty small.  I just wanted to know how bad his springs were sagging.  BTW, i'm at sea level too!

Sounds about right.  The 31" tires are pretty big for the YJ, and chances are it'll rub.

31's are the limit on a YJ and will look overstuffed.

It doesn't sound as if his springs have sagged much, they would rub under normal driving if they had.  They'll rub with the slightest bump even if they're in the best condition.

Tell him to consider installing TJ flares or a full-length add-a-leaf (1.5" lift) to help clear those tires.  Or just get a 4" kit.

The easiest option would be to go with some TJ flares and trim the fenders.  It would be easer then wrestling with the springs to add one leaf.

What about a lift kit with one or two inches, and some new shocks?

Well I don't think anyone makes a lift that's below 2.5".  If he's against chopping the fenders then he could do a 3/4" lift with shackles and a 1" body lift.

stock height with 235/75/R15's when i was stock was 28" to the middle of the front bumper. I had bagged springs back then. I'd convert 4" shackles to 6" ones and drop the tire size to 30's. That way the jeep will flex better.

But thats me.

I have a 95YJ with 2" shackles, 2" body lift and a 4" suspension and 31" tires. I ran 2" shackles and 31" tires for a long time and no rub.
