35's?
« on: August 15, 2006, 12:57:30 AM »
Im Lookin to run 35 inch xterrains on my 89 manual 4banger with an 8.8 and 4:88s as it stands there are no performance mods done yet (hopefully soon). This will not be my daily driver and the drive train is gonna be around for a while (broke college student).  I am curious if anyone is running this setup. I am also concerned about the life of my clutch with the larger tires. I live in South Florida so hills and rocks are none existent for the most part. I am not to concerned about my jeep bieng a total slug. It will only see around town driving. Just want somethin to bomb around in and wheel in

I got alittle carried away with the lift at the beginning of the project which was really stupid. A buddy of mine loaned me his 33 xterrains and with 4:10 gears I thought that it was acceptable so can I expect similar power as this setup?

Well, you could run 35's but it's a bit different then running stock gears and 33's.  The tires weight more and the rolling resistance increases.  Strength wise, I'd be worried about breaking the U-joints on the D30.  Might want to upgrade the shafts although there probably aren't many places to wheel other then mud.

Do you think it would be worth my wild to wait and get a front 44 so I can gear it to 5:13s
What would be a good 44 to match the 8.8 width also can I run bigger than 5:13 in an 8.8?
Would spacers to match the lug pattern on a 44 affect the strength of the 8.8?
 Thanks for the input

If you can wait, then wait.  Lower the gearing the better.  Actually for 35's you'd be better off going even lower.  5.13's are good for 33's.  The only reason to go with 5.13's instead of 5.38's would be if you're planning on swapping engines.  Even then you could love with lower gears if you swap in a tranny with OD.

In any case, spacers do add to the list of things to break.  I haven't heard of one breaking though. It would probably be more likely to break off the lugs then the spacers.  Although it's best not to use them if you don't have to.

the 4.88s and 35s will make it feel like its geared a little lower than stock, but power and milage would be the same (i'm thinking)...thats what i plan on running is 4.88s and 35s for now after i get my Currie 9" rear...with the 4.88s, i think the final rpm's in 5th will be like 2500 or so...isnt that about what SMC gets? hes got 4.88s and 35s...later on ill be swapping out the motor and tranny for a 350 and SM 465 with like a 6:1 ratio 1st gear...so my 4.88s will run me fine...

2500rpm's is going to be a little low still.  The difference with a V8 is that you have a lot more torque that makes up for the lack of gearing.  Like I said, if you're going to keep the 2.5L you will really want to gear lower then you normally would with a larger engine.

Thanks for the info guys.
I am gonna try and run d30 with an aussie and 4:88s and the 8.8 with a detroit carrier and 4:88s. hopefully with 4:88s I will be able to move the 35 xterrains. At the moment I have no engine mods unless an exhaust manifold made of swiss cheese is considered a mod. In your opinion what is the best engine upgrade I ca possibly do (Where should I start)

Thanks
