Who has a light bar?
« on: September 22, 2006, 12:08:29 AM »
Hey guys and gals. I'm trying to decide on which full-frame windshield light bar to get. I need it sturdy enough to hold a canoe.

I'm really not interested in the Warrior safari light bar because of how it is angled instead of straight across. So that leaves me with Maxi, Smitty built, Kentrol, and maybe others that I don't know about.

Can anyone tell me if they think their light bar is sturdy enough for a canoe and what type it is? The canoe is only 60lbs. I already have a rear bracket in mind to attach to my LoD extreme bumper. Thanks

I have a 91 YJ, 2.5L

I've got a CARR rota bar light bar, it's not a full frame light bar and is to flimsy for anything other than lights. You also have to drill 1/2" holes in your windshield frame to install it.

Olympic makes one but I've seen others too.  Olympic also makes a 'Quick Rack' which is basically that.  This is assuming you don't have a top on.

i would go with a Garvin Expedition rack im of the mindset that if youre gonna put lights on the top of a jp, then it should at least be functional....i think the lone light bar looks a little funny (sorry for stepping on toes here) no matter how many lights are on it...the roof rack is the way to go....the garvin is the best looking roof rack ive seen to date...

Here's mine. It actually was part of a Safari Rack that I took the rear part off. The previous owner used it for his kiak.
Here it was when I bought it

Now it looks like this

hmm so much for low profile light bars.....ow well...

speaking of cannos and jeeps about a month after i got my jeep we used to to cary our canoo to a nearby lakke and just straped it over the windsheild and rollbar.. only problem is that the canno waas hanging over both sides of the jeep (front and back)... owered visability which i guess the rack bringing it up higher could help you see beter.. or if you ahve a shorter canno than mine..

Yea, the light bar is high because it was part of the safari rack that had to clear the top. Now that I am not gonna put the rack back on I want to cut the light bar down.

Hey jwrape, that bar isn't too bad!  Does it whistle when driving down the highway or anything?  If I got any type of rack it would be like what you got on the back though.

I have a 14' canoe and I do strap it to the top with those foam blocks on the gunnels.  It works great except when driving on the highway.  Every 5 minutes I have to pull over and re-align the canoe because the wind.  I'm just looking for something more solid to anchor the thing onto.

I think that light bars look akward alone also, but I guess I could always take it off when not in use (only 4 bolts).  Buy the way guys, thanks for your input.

The bar doesn't whistle but the far drivers side light does. Don't understand it but it whistles a little. I only notice it when the top is off.  Very faint sound. Personallt I wouldn't mount a Canoe on top of the Jeep top itself. I would buy the rear rack like your saying and then add a support to it to raise the Canoe just above the top of the Jeep.

the photos of the new lightbar are not up yet, but Grant (owner) says they will be even nicer than the last version (which was awesome in my opinion)
