Oil Pressure Gauge Problem
« on: October 24, 2006, 11:16:53 PM »
Hey guys, i think my oil pressure gauge went out today. As soon as the ignition excites the gauge it reads over 80 when the key is turned off it naturally falls back down, but doesn't fluctuate at all.  Tried unplugging the Oil pressure sending unit and no effect.  Just recently replaced my sending unit, could it be the sending unit, or is the gauge?

How close are you to needing a oil change?  I changed my  sending unit recently and it started acting like yours.  I did an oil change - switched to moble 1 and purolator one filter.  Gauge went back to normal.  So long as your check guages light did not go on I think you should think about it.  Good luck.

So my guess is that it reads fine at idle and pegs when at anything above?

I had the same thing happen and it was my oil pressure sender.  Those things are cheap and even if you just replaced it, doesn't mean they won't break.  I'd take it back and get another one.

It reads maxed out at all times, only drops down below maxed out when the jeep is off and the guage has time to settle.

Sound's like what Jeffy said is your best recourse.  I have read different boards, when mine toasted, that the sending units go bad pretty regularly.  I have also read that to ease your mind you should hook up a manual oil pressure reader to test.  If you have only had it for awhile - take it back.  Remember to put some dielectric grease in the connector - gunk can make it read poorly too.

Hmm, I'd still go ahead and swap it out again.  It's a cheap way to test.  The senders are way more likely to go bad then the gauge.  If it's the gauge though, you'd need a whole cluster, I think.  If it's the engine then it could get costly to find the problem.  Either a passage is semi-blocked or the pressure regulator could be bad.

Hmm, okay will do some testing, what gets me is the gauge maxes out as soon as it is excited by the ignition, before the engine is actually running.

Hmm, are you sure you reconnected the sensor?  You might try disconnecting the sensor and see if it does anything.  At least that would help localize the problem.

Yea, i tried that last night, disconected and reconnect the sensor started the jeep with the sensor unplugged, all of which didnt have an effect on what the guage is doing.

So the gauge still pegged with it unplugged?

Yea, it still maxed out with the sensor unplugged, its weird.  It maxes out before the engine is even running, and having the engine running doesnt have any effect on the gauge at any rpm.

Ok, in that case I'd probably check the grounds for the gauges.  It's probably not sender or engine related if it's pegging with no input.  I believe the pressure sender only goes to the gauge and doesn't go to the PCM or anywhere else.

first off i must say dont use electronic gauges they suck, and will never be as good as a mechanicl one will be. i use all mechanicl gauges and have never had a problum. a good gauge would be a auto meter mechanicl oil pressure gauge part # 3321 best gauges i have ever used. good luck and rember electronic gauges suck. lol nothing can replace a good mechanical gauge.
