What 4banger do you run?
« on: April 24, 2007, 06:03:25 PM »
I see loads of people running around with the 2.5L AMC motor in their jeeps, but what I want to know is how many of y'all are still running the original Jeep 4 cylinder motors--the L134 and F134?

Think you could give some years perspective on the list?

I've got a 97 TJ with the 2.5l, but would that be a AMC? or Chrysler?  I certainly don't think a Pontiac.

I answered the poll with 2.5 AMC because that is the one I use now but I also have a ´43 GPW with the original L134 stock and it runs great.

you dont realy hit the trails that often with a jeep holding the go devil and hurricane motor. even as strong as they are, there more like vintage jewels.

I don't know about that. My daily driver is a '57 CJ5 with the F134 Hurricane and I hit trails with it all the time. Heck, just last weekend I drove it 325 miles to go offroading in George Washington National Forest for the weekend, sunk her into some headlight deep mud pits and forded a river. You should check out www.earlycj5.com there's hundreds of us out there wheelin' our L and F-head motors!

OK, I added more information to the poll.  I couldn't put them in chronologically order since I would of had to reset the poll.  I added an 'Other' since people liked to swap other 4 cylinders back in the day.  The Pinto engine used to be a popular swap.

Funny you should mention www.earlycj5.com.  Sparky used to be on the 4banger mailing list and website back in the day.

thats what i love about the go devil.. go through headlight deep mud water and keep on going.. even had it stall in that and start right back up and drive out. you cant kill that motor it just keeps on going.

to add to what i said above.. we changed the oil in our cj3a on Saturday and it was :uhoh: watery with about a half inch of gunk stuck to the drain plug (drain plug has magnet on bottom so metal stuff made it stick there... dn the diffs had some water also... my dads taking it to Texas tomorrow for a jeep jamboree so hopefully it keeps on going... worst part is ounce the rings go we are going to have to part with that block cuz its already been bored 8-0 over and we cant bore it out anymore... but tomorrow night my grandpa and i are taking the motor, trany, transfer case, and axles out of our parts jeep to sell the frame and body so we do have 1 extra motor..and another extra block.. so the 4banger will stay..

my dj had the merc 4 cyl it was offered in the dj for a while, it was a great motor but switched to an chevy 8.

still sold the mottor with 80 some for a couple bucks to a guy tring to build a period jeep. turns out the merc, used in boats and even planes!, was a popular swap back in the 70s.

my daily with the 2.5 isn't quite as solid as the merc, but it better these days then the eight.
