Well My friend just picked up his old Jeep Cherokee limited from his older Brother in Chicago.  It drove it from Chicago to Denver, no problem except evertime he hits forty mph all the sudden the car goes into a pretty serious speed wobble, its real wierd like it will be smooth sailing then all the sudden at 40 it just goes nuts, and the car is all over the place, making terrible noises and vibrating like crazy, afteryou break out of the wobble or accelerate through it its fine.  Anyone have any ideas what would cause this 40 mile wobble?

FYI: The front transfer case has a broken gear in it so the front wheel drive has been disconnected.

What do you mean by the front wheel drive has been disconnected?  Did he just disconnect the front driveshaft or does it have a vacuum disconnect and he pulled that?  If the axle does not have a vacuum disconnect the driveshaft turns 24/7 even when in 2wd.  Which could cause vibrations if it's damaged in some way.

But if the driveshaft is disconnected then I'd maybe suspect the tires or maybe even a bent axle shaft.

disconnected the driveshaft, its a really strange wobble like its pretty serious vibration you gotta break out of but it only hits at 40 and at other speeds its a real smooth ride

So, so much to check on a front end.  Might want to look at the control arm bracketry on the axle and on the frame rail.  See if those aren't totally bent or mangled up.

Alignment might give you an answer too.  Improper toe, maybe that's causing it too??  :?

When I picked up my TJ it had an awful wobble like you speak of.  I noticed that the steering stabilizer was shot.  I replaced it and it minimized it, but the major culprit was my tires.  At the time I had some Super Swampers (31") and boy were they out of whack.  I brought them to a tire shop to get them balanced, but it turned out that the tread was out of round.  Most major 4WD shops will put your tires on a lathe type deal and re-round your tires for approx. $10 a pop.  I just decided to upgrade.

I've seen a guy throw on extra rim weights just to scrae the heck out of the driver   :yikes: . Might just be a tire out of balance,or ?.
