91 WRANGLER 2.5 POWER STEERING CONVERSION

I AM IN HELL!

OK, HERE'S WHAT I HAVE:

1. REQUIRES A DIFFERENT WATER PUMP AND PULLEY TO ACCOMODATE THE SERPENTINE BELT.
GOT A NEW WATER PUMP.
GOT THE PULLEY FROM A 1985 CHEROKEE.

2. REQUIRES DIFFERENT P/S PUMP W/EXTERNALLY MOUNTED RESERVOIR.
GOT THE PUMP AND RESERVOIR FROM A 1985 CHEROKEE

3. REQUIRES DIFFERENT ALTERNATOR PULLEY TO ACCOMODATE THE SERPENTINE BELT.ALSO REQUIRES DIFFERENT BRACKET TO ALIGN ALL OF THIS.
BOUGHT THE PULLEY NEW.
GOT A BRACKET FROM A 1985 CHEROKEE.

4. REQUIRES DIFFERENT HARMONIC BALANCER TO ACCOMODATE THE BELT.
TOOK ONE FROM A 1990 CHEROKEE.

DEAR GOD!
NOTHING LINES UP.
HAD TO PUT WASHERS BEHIND THE WATER PUMP PULLEY TO LINE UP WITH THE BALANCER.
HAD TO MAKE AN ALTERNATOR BRACKET AS WELL AS MODIFY THE ALTERNATOR CASE AND FAN.
POWER STEERING PUMP DOES NOT LINE UP.
RIPS THE BELT RIGHT OFF.
ALSO HAD TO USE CARRIAGE BOLT FOR THE ALTERNATOR BRAKET AND TIMING COVER SO THE BELT COULD CLEAR.
THE LIST OF PROBLEMS GOES ON.
NOTHING IS WORKING HERE.
I AM ABOUT TO GO TO THE DEALERSHIP AND GET RAPED JUST TO GET IT OVER WITH.



COULD SOMEONE PLEASE POST A PICTURE, LIST OF EXACT PARTS, OR SOME KIND OF USEFUL ADVICE HERE?
I AM NO DUMMY.
i AM JUST NOT A JEEP "EXPERT".

You have a '91?  If that's the case why are you buying stuff from a '85?

I had none of the problems you're describing...  I replaced the driver's side idler with the pump... got an external from a cherokee and hooked it all up.  Only other thing I needed was a longer belt.

I was just getting what was available.
The wrecking yards out here don't have ANY wranglers, and the parts look pretty much the same on a cherokee.
In fact, the parts bolt on no problem.
The fronts of the engines look identical.

Did you have to convert from v belt to serpentine?
I did.

Hmm, a 85 is a TBI engine.  Most of the accessories and brackets aren't shared with the MPFI's.  I believe the '85 uses a V-belt like the CJ.  Alignment between the two is different as you have found out.

The easiest and trouble free way would be to get the parts off a Jeep of the same year or really close.  You're dealing with a 6 year spread and a lot has changed.

I was told that 1984 through 1991 all steering parts are the same.
This is why I am trying to find someone who has done this before, specifically on a 1991 2.5L.
Mainly because of the v belt to serpentine belt conversion.

I think you got some bad info from someone. 1991 was a transition year for Jeeps.  It was the first for the MPFI.  If you had a '90 it should be able to do what you're trying to do, problem is you don't. You've already proven it not the case since you're having to change everything.  If it was truly the same, all you'd need to do is to get the pump, steering box , pulley and maybe the PS bracket.  All of the brackets are different on the TBI's when with the MPFI's.  This will definitely put stuff out of plane with each other.

What you need;  all 1991 and up  parts.  Best to stick with 1991-1995.  Don't mix and match pumps with boxes since some fitting changes did happen.  It is also said that the steering ratio changes year to year.

Which is why I don't understand the problem.  As far as the engine goes, all your doing is replacing the idler with the pump.

Well, he made the problem for himself by buying parts from a TBI 2.5L then tried to mix and match.

Which is what I assumed... he didn't need to convert, he needed to get a hold of the right parts.  Those parts are out there, he'll just need to look a little harder.  I will definately keep my eyes open, I'm planning to go to FNJeep tomorrow.
