Topic: Just installed a Firepower set

After reading Jeffy's review of the Performance Distributers Firepower set, ( www.4bangerjp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=29 ) I decided to run one myself.

I ordered it directly from their site www.performancedistributors.com, although I should tell anyone who's interested in this set to save your self nineteen dollars, and order the parts seperately.  You wont get the nice little billet aluminum wire spacers, but they aren't nineteen dollars nice.
Anyway, I ordered it from them because the shipping was better than through www.Quadratech.com .

The kit doesn't come with plugs but everyone has their own prefrence when it comes to them, so that's not a biggie.  I run dollar sixty Champion copper plugs (which with this kit I can gap to .065" now), and they've done right by me.

After installing it, I washed up and started the ('98) Jeep.  It chugged like a frat boy.
Putting the wires on the distributer in the proper order remedied that though, and now she runs like a champ.

As for HP gains, I'll have to wait and see.  A few weeks ought to tell me what I need to know.

I'm not sure yet what kind of performance gains I've gotten.  It runs freakin' awesome, but that's in relation to how bad it was running before.

The number three and four plugs were burnt up bad so just replacing those would show better performance.

I'm happy with the whole setup, but the jury is still out.

I already use some heavier guage wires.  I was thinking about picking up the PD Screamin Demo Coil and the PD cap and rotor w/brass terminals and running my plugs at .65. 

Thing is, the Accel coil I use now is supposedly a high performance coil.  I've tried running that with plugs gapped clear up to .65, but the engine ran like hell.  Dropped back to .35 and it was ok; then up to .45 when I went with Iridium XP plugs.

What I am saying is my first "high performance" coil did not seem to perform highly, as it were.  I guess you guys using the PD setup have been ok with the PD Demon coil, right?  .65 gap, ok? 

I dig the PD wires, but the pricing for 4 of them is practically the same as the pricing for wires for a 6 or 8 cylinder. And, I've read posts suggesting that the PD Demon coil and plug regapping are the key ingredients to making any performance improvements with the PD setup

Since I've been running the PD setup the longest, I'll give an update.  No problems what so ever.  I haven't rechecked my gap after installing them but I'm sure they're probably still at .065".  Like I said in my original review, my engine runs smoother then when I had my Jacobs/MSD setup and the plugs were only gapped to .055".

If you really want to save a buck, I believe if you buy the parts separately from Q-tech, you can save $10 over the I6 model.  Also omit the billet wire looms.  They look cool but you can probably live without them.

Like the original post I purchased my parts seperatly.  My savings was around $20 before shipping directly from PD.  Getting everything but the wire holders.  I reused my year old Champion 4412's and gapped them at .065 as recommended by PD.   I really like the performance.  I ran it for a week with my rock-it intake and open filter and had not reset the pcm.   I was changing things so I decieded to go back to the stock air box and did a reboot of the pcm.  I think the engine overall runs better and smoother.  Low end is definitly better with the stock air and the idle is definitly smoother.  My freeway driving with the auto is much much nicer.  Acceleration and sustaining hills are great.   

I rented a I6 auto Wrangler in Hawaii back in august and have to say with the PD upgrade much of my hwy and freeway driving is pretty close.  Those 2006's are a lot quiter inside than my 97.  My idle is just the same as the I-6 now.  Not silky smooth like my Suby but very consistant.   Did I mention that my radio comes in clearer?

I just ordered the Screamin Demon Coil and the Cap and Rotor with the Brass terminals.  I am going to see if I can get by without the PD wires, since my wires are already Accel 8mm jobs.  I'll install it, regap my Iridium XP plugs to .65 and see how this setup drives.

Just an FYI: my old MSD cables were 8mm.  They are small compared to the PD's though.
