Tapping, revisited.

Well,  As you might remember, I posted awhile back about my 89' tapping when warm. I pulled and replaced the lifters, and still have no luck, the question now is, what is the next logical replacement? I guess It could be anything. When I replaced the lifters, the push rods looked dirty, but straight, rockers didn't look any different. Help??? :uhoh: :puzzled:

Sometimes an exhaust leak can sound like tapping.  You may want to check for this.

New exhaust, no leaks. I know it's coming from the back of the valve cover area.

when you had the pushrods out did you check to make sure they weren't clogged?  I have seen on a few different engines build up inside the pushrod that blocked oil flow. No oil equals noisy rockers.  Also when you had the rockers off, did you check them for wear?  If any part of the rocker is worn, the valve lash won't be right and it will make noise as well.

Are you sure it's not normal valve noise?  The I4 and the I6 are a bit loud.

well, it's apparent on onl one cylinder, and it was never noisy previously, I suppose I could replace the pushrods and rockers, but damned if I do all that and it's still tapping.... :brick:

Run some 'seafoam' thru the intake & some miracle oil, then change your oil & see if you still have the problem! It could just be from build up! No sense replacing parts if you don't have to!

Been there done that and about three oil changes in the last 1500 miles because of it. Marvel, Seafoam, Slick 50....

Drive it until you blow it up nascar style.  I did that with mine, had a really really bad tapping or clunking when I started it one morning, new instantly it needed to be rebuilt.  Blew it up on the the 15 mile drive to the mechanic.  Oil went everywhere it was awsome exept that I was responsible for the bill.  Owned it for three months and had to rebuild the trans and engine, good thing that I bought it right, boss was in Wife trouble for buying to many toys and got it for nothing.

Well, I drive it across the state about 6-7 hours all the time, its not really hurting anything, just sounds like a mess.

Mine does it too, made several long trips without it affecting anything but my ears. Until it does I write it off as a Jeep thing. :confused:
