Well I got motivated!

I tore into the rear axle first... Got the everything apart. The big PITA was pulling the old carrier bearings off...

Made a trip to Harbor freight this morning - and pick up a split bearing puller. Even with it the carriers did not want to budge - hit 'em a few times with the air hamer. Then cut a slit in 'em with the dremel. One popped right off the other broke. A few more tries with the puller & air hammer it came off.

I will prolly milk this for a while - I have to wait until I get some tools back from a friend to do the front. I want to replace the front axle U-joints while I swap gears.

Still need to set up the new stuff in the rear. Just glad to get it all apart w/o much drama.  :thumbsup:

Chapter 2 - or how to install new carrier bearings.

Literally a hot tip.

Put the new carrier bearings in the oven and heat to 400 deg.

Did not need a press to install them -- just a few light hits and they are on.

Need to mount the new pinion bearing for a test fit. The tolerences here seem tighter so - I am going to put the pinion in the freezer and heat the bearing to 400. Going to have to wait on this one... prolly won't get to it until thursday... Got to work late tomorrow.

Hehe - The wife was going to bake a cake and already had the oven hot. I already had the pinion in the freezer so I could not resist temptation... Pinion shim and bearing INSTALLED!  :naughty:

Whadda ya mean the cake tastes like 80W90 !!!  :pot:

I'll be checking patterns soon... nice jump start.

My neighbor has a 20 ton press like that...

Why buy when you can borrow! - I was surprised I got by with out a press so far.

lol we barrowed a 20 pound one of those ounce at our local auto parts store and they just gave it to use cuz they couldn't figure out how to use it..  :roflol:

After much delay - the rear axle is done... it sucks to do gears! Yuck! Once I got a decent pattern, I broke the cast shim for the carrier and had to start over.  :'(

Guess I'll know better for the front.  :eek:

Biggest problem was the crush sleeve and outer pinion bearing. I rigged up a piece of angle iron to the flange yoke and used a big breaker bar to seat the outer bearing... that was by far the worst part.

Gotta go it' beer thirty!  :beer:

Almost forgot... 4.88 aand the 35's worked out pretty good ~ fells about back where it was.
