2WD and V6 is the key to a 5 on 4.5" pattern. The '88-'95 stuff is 55" wide and requires spacers to get them within striking distance of the 60" stock axle. It'll have crappy gears and a funky 3rd, so don't even bother with it. 4.10, 4.56, and 4.88 are factory options so they're out there.
The Tacoma is a little better in that it's 60" wide, and factory 4.10 and 4.56 gears are out there so it's a cinch to gear them. Both come with 10" drums and metric wheel studs, but if you do go down this road there is a part number for a straight swap 1/2-20 stud that doesn't require modifying anything. You'll need a adapter to run your brake line to the rear
T on the axle housing on either.
Now 6 lug and say a matching D44 front is another story. 86-95 is a 58" axle and is close enough to not bother with spacers, the Tacoma is 60" still. Both come with 11" drums, but the e-brake set up has them
tied together for single line to the front which is different from Jeep stuff.
Then there's the electric lockers. Only available in the Tacoma TRD (6 lug) but can be retro fit in to the older pre-96 stuff. The non-TRD Tacoma is such a completely different 3rd and housing that it can't be
made to work.
