4"X6" in the front doesn't leave you with many options. plate speakers seem to be the best choice....unless you hack into your dash to install these:

the brackets enable the installation of 5 1/4" speakers. i would imagine the sound quality would be improved but i worry about compromising the stability of the dashboard (several cuts must be made into the dashboard mounts...[at least on MY 99 Jeep TJ they would be necessary]). anyone have any experience with these adapter plates? cheers.

No, but I do have experience with the plates. I tried a pair of Kicker and then a pair of Boston 4x6's in the dash of my Toronado before replacing them with the Infinity plates. They were actually cheaper than the Bostons and sound MUCH better.

I purchased a set of these off ebay last year. I didn't have to cut anything ( just the wires to put new connections on them) but no dashboard cutting at all..Just took the old speakers out and installed..I put a set of pioneers and sound a heck of alot better then the 4x6's

4x6's suck.  5.5's will be a nice upgrade.  I haven't see one that requires cutting though.
