2.4L after market
« on: March 30, 2008, 12:11:54 AM »
Hello fellow Jeepers!  I have a 2004 2.4L wrangler SE and ive tried and tried to find performance enhancing parts online but to no avail.  Maybe I am looking in the wrong places but sites like JC Whitney and Quadratec etc., all seem to only carry parts for CJs, and YJs and TJ with either the 4.0 or 2.5L engines.   Does anyone know where I could find ANYTHING to boost my jeeps HP?   Do they make throttle body spacers for them?  I am finaly getting in touch with my mechanical abilities (changed my own serpentine, plugs, wires) but am still rather amateur.  What can I do that doesnt require too much difficulty at first?   I already know about cold air intakes but as of yet cant afford one.  I am just looking for ideas and web sites to find things on or even brick and mortar stores to find stuff.

look for pt cruiser engine mods (and anything chrysler that holds a 2.4L, the toyota 2.4 may be the same, haven't read up on it though). You could probably find a stock 2.1(?)L Turbo pt cruiser engine and take the exhaust, turbo, and other stuff and swap it! (the other sized corporate four cylinder is the same block) Not sure about what else...

Of course, I could be totally wrong on all of this, I've only read about it a little bit.

Do some research and find out if what I said was true, I guess my only sound advice is to look into the PT cruiser engine upgrades.

hope I helped!

I think you're totally wrong on this.

The 2.4L is a Crysler engine.  They call it their World engine since they use it in a bunch of different cars and trucks.  It is not shared  or borrowed from anyone else.

You cannot swap parts freely between the engines because hte Jeep uses a North-South arrangement while most others use a Transverse arrangement.  This is one of the reason's why the TB is where it is on the 2.4L.  Things like exhausts will not only depend on the engine but routing depends on the underside of the vehicle.  Internal parts should be interchangeable.  Although, parts for the SRT4 and the PT Cruiser GT have different compressions ratios.

Air Sierra is probably the best one to talk to about the 2.4L.  He put a SRT4 turbo on his Jeep 2.4L.  If I remember right he had to turn the manifold 180* then do some minor fabbing to get it to work.

Yes he made an adapter plate to turn the exhaust manifold around in essence he mounted it upside down, so the turbo sits in the front of the engine. He did a very nice job on the whole setup

A guy I work with has a Neon SRT-4 and is planning on putting an after market turbo in it.   He is going to sell me the stock turbo on the cheap.  Is this a possibility?   Would it require any fabrications or is it bolt on?  Does anyone make turbo add ons for the 2.4L jeep engine?   I will be moving to a town in Up State NY that is pretty much all hills and could use a little extra kick in the ass.   I plan on regearing a bit for some bigger tires as well.  I plan on going with 31's for now as I dont get to do much off roading but there are some old logging roads and muddy spots in the area i can tear ass on.

I live in So Cali and with regearing it should do hills just fine. We got something a bit bigger than hills and my little Jeep does the hills just fine. I run 4.56 gears and 33x12.5 tires and like this set up. The big grades I take in 4 th gear but I can still climb them at 65 winding the little beast to close to 4000 rpm this will tackle the Grapevine as well as Cajun pass. Slight hills and passing is possible in 6th gear. It will turn about 3000 rpm at 75mph
To me its just the way I want it needs no more messing with. if I ever decide that I will really want more power I'll shoehorn a PT cruiser Turbo motor in it. In my book just adding the turbo is possible but why not go with a motor that is built for it compression wiise and has the ECM programmed correctly. Makes for a more dependable setup.
Seems to me you want an offroad rig as dependable as you can make it and hotrodding it is not really the way to do it.
Anyway here are 2 links to a Guy's turbo install on a 2.4L engine

What about superchargers?   I have to get on the highway constantly nd would like to be able to cruise at a decent speed (especialy on I-90 when I go to Massachusettes.)   I read up on the Avenger and it looks cool....a bit expensive but less than an engine/transmission swap apparently.   There is a 4 banger 2.4L that has one in it that I saw and read about online that runs 37 inch tires on 4:88s.  Yes he had to get rid of some of the emission thingamabobs and put the gas tank in the bed but I dont plan on running anything bigger than 33s or5s in the future.  Id like to maintain highway speeds with bigger tires and with a supercharger and gearing I wonder how that would do?   I rather like my little engine as it has lots of room for me to get in there and screw stuff up...i mean tinker around.  However I do miss the power my old YJ 4.0L had.
