are all teh 2.5l from JEEPS the same? ie will a 91YJ 2.5 work in a '98 TJ?

No they aren't the same, but... technically any of them CAN be swapped, but past that statement there are complications, like the control systems, fuel delivery, transfer cases... lots of stuff!

As a general rule though; 84-86.5 are computer controlled carbuerated, 86.5~91? are TBI, 91(92)~97 or something are MPI, and past that up until 2006 were sequential multi port (correct me if I'm wrong on these, just off the top of my head).

ALL of them use the same block, with XJ and MJ blocks shaved for a higher compression (from 9.1:1 to 9.2:1) and more power (only something like 4hp or so), with it downtuned in the Wrangler until the TJ came out?

Intake Manifold designs change throughout the years (obviously, as far as from Carb to TBI to MPI goes, but also I believe the MPI intake changed after 2000? to restore some of the power that was robbed due to higher emission standards)

Some years' wiring and ECU's aren't interchangeable (specifically after 91 I mean, most of the stuff pre 91 won't accept anything from later models), but most of the sensors are.

I could go on and on, but for the sake of not rambling;

yes, the YJ engine will work, if you bring over the correct parts/only use specific one's and keep most of the TJ stuff, but it won't have the same power if you swap over the cylinder head without shaving to 9.2:1 (but if that's the case, why not go farther and do a stroke job!?!?)

complicated stuff... man...

Correct me if I'm wrong on anything, I tend to be stupid!

I know when I had my engine rebuilt they used a YJ block and had it rebuilt and put my TJ stuff on it.  Runs fine.

basically i dont want a long down time, waiting on maching work etc, so i guess i should look for a '97 or newer 2.5 to rebuild, that way i can get everything done including wireing it, i have an extra engine wire harness. then spend a weekend just dropping the completed motor in...

well, um... yeah, that sounds like a good plan! I'm gonna try to update my electrical/ecu/intake manifold to a 92 soon, so maybe you can do a writeup of how installing/removing the engine harness goes? I figure I have a good idea of what I'm in for, but I don't feel like "winging it" when it comes to redoing the wiring.

all i was going to do was remove one sensor at a time and put it on the new motor, with them sitting side by side....

haha, well that works for you! What is routing through the firewall going to be like?

I'd like to ask a related question; I was looking thru my Haynes and found the 88 2.5 is rated at ~83hp and the 89 2.5 is rated at ~123hp. What gives? same block, same fuel system. Any one got a clue? Is the head different? If so is it a bolt on swap? Easy?  :brick:

Um... wow? That's the original output of the GP four cylinder! How old, and how wrong is your Haynes manual? Your 88 will have 123 HP also. 84, 85, and early 86 scored something like 110 (computer controlled carb), then later 86 (like mine, june 86) 117, which was upgraded in 87 to 123 (TBI), which carried to 91 I think? Then it was ~130(MPI).  I think 97 saw sequential MPI, I've never seen any numbers stating difference, or even what the difference between it and the other was... it's a quizzical topic...

In 2000, I believe it actually lost alot of HP with more emissions stuff, but gained it back with a redesigned intake (still only rated to 125 I believe)? The same thing happened to the 4.0L in that year...

I'm still trying to research that last part, it's mostly speculation and I need to take a look at pre-2000 Intakes to see if they are different, anyone got pictures?

I actually would really love to see a picture of pre-2000 or 2001 intakes, I plan on implementing a 2002 one with a 1992 wiring harness and ECU, plus a 4.0 TB. I know that quite a few 6cyl people have swapped 2000 or 2001 intakes onto their earlier one's and have seen something like +10 HP! This is because they don't have all the emissions crap on theirs, but put on a better flowing intake, which really opens it up to power (and supposedly this also shifts the power curve down, making it peak even earlier and stronger). If this could be done to a 4cyl, then that would be awesome!

Haynes is the worst followed by Chilton's.  And both are fiirestarted compared to a FSM.

The carbureted 1984-1987 2.5L AMC's were rated around 89hp or so.  The 1997-1990 TBI EFI 2.5L's were around 112hp or so.  The 1991-1995 MPFI 2.5L's were 123hp.  The 1997-2003 MPFI's were rated a 120hp.  (They dropped in a different cam and changed the injectors to help boost torque at the cost of 3hp.)

Oh, okay, there ya go! I just realized why my numbers were all off... the whole YJ's= lower CR than XJ's! I've only really read up on the XJ's, so I didn't think about it being that much different, so yeah, maybe I should go make sure I know what Yj's have before I try to give tech advice on them!

Here is the source for the numbers that I've quoted in other posts:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMC_Straight-4_engine

Says 117 hp for TBI, 121 for MPI.

Remember that Wikki is user provided....
