Tj cage in a YJ
« on: April 15, 2008, 03:45:53 PM »
Ok i've been trying to get a more family friendly cage in my heep.  I found this discussion on the jeep forum http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=530680  does anyone on here have any experince with this swap.  It seems that the guys at JPmagazine know how to do it, but a lot of other folks say it can't be done.  :fish:  I have found lots of tj cages and no yj cages.  I gotta do something for my kid.  he loves to ride with me, but i won't take him on much offroad because there is no protection for him in my back seat.  thanks for the input.

I would just go with a +'92 cage.  Although even those will require some work to use.  I think the problem you will run into using a TJ cage is that the front arms aren't going to work without some fabrication.  The pitch of the TJ windshield is sharper then the YJ's.  I would think there might be some differences in the floor mount but thats pretty minor.  For the rear you'd need to reinforce the wheel well with some steel to make sure it doesn't punch through.  I would highly recommend welding the TJ cage together the main hoop is 3 different parts that are bolted together.

Since you have a -'91 cage, why not have someone with a welder and tube bender make the rear support?

I could ask Pete about that article, he's on another forum that I used to hang out on, if you want more info.

Or if you just want to buy something and have someone sho can weld it in.  Take a look at the kit that Koz sells
http://www.kozoffroad.com/pages_catalog/rollcages/yj/yjrollcages.htm

$319 isn't too bad for tubes that you can just weld in.  If you had a bender and did it yourself it would be around $150 worth of tube.

I have the one from Koz, it's not a simple weld in cage, there is some cutting and cooping that you need to do they run it the dom longer which is nice so it dose fit. Over all I like the cage one drawback to it is I can't use my E-brake (Foot Peddle) the down bar gets in the way you can always bend the foot peddle I think it might work. But I have put the Ford 8.8 in mine and I have not gotten around to getting the E-brake hooked up.  I plane on using a hand pull one another project.

Other than that for the price it's hard to beat.

Have any pictures of the final product?  There's was the design I sort of copied when I bent mine.  However I can get at the ebrake on mine - didn't put a bend at the bottom of the A pillars.

I have not taken a picture of it installed, but it looks like the one in there pic, with the bottem of the down tube with more of a bend, I will try to remember to get a pic of it this weekend I have to change the top any how to my summer top. Just kinda hard to do during the week I watch my 17 month old daughter she likes to run in the parking lot.  :nono: and she is fast!
