Topic: Cherokee & Comanche Dana 44

It is a little known fact that from 1987 to 1990 Chrysler had an upgraded axle package for the Cherokee and Comanche Models.  1987 was the first year for the 4.0L I-6 and the new axle was only availble with that engine.  Back then, it was a standard output version with a Renix Fuel-Injection System.  The 'Metric Ton' package for the two-door Cherokee and Comanchee replaced the Dana 35C with the stronger Dana 44. The option group wasn't very popular and was only available through special orders in later years.  Although they were standard axles for Jeep exported to South America.

The Dana 44's axle tubes measured 2-3/4 inchs with a 30 spline,  1.30 inch axle shaft.  The axle flanges are standard Dana 44 pattern unlike the TJ Dana 44.  Drums brakes were standard but measured 10 inch by 2.5 inch instead of the standard 9 inch by 2.5 inch or 10 inch x 1.75 inch drums found on the Dana 35C.

The Cherokee Dana 44 housing is set up for springs over the axle while the Comanche is set up for springs under the axle.  The gears and carrier are standard Dana 44 parts.  The axle shafts are currently being used in the TJ Dana 44 so there is a supply of stock and aftermarket shafts available.
