I had a Series 40 which was the standard one they made before they expanded the line.  It was loud but other then that, didn't do much.  Fell off at the output flange because of poor welds.  There are better mufflers to be had.

The flowmaster is one of the loudest mufflers out there.  It gets really annoying when crusing down the highway.

As for what I recommend; http://www.4bangerjp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=16

I have a few friends with flowmasters (the quieter ones) on 4.0s and 2.5's and they have held up fine and sound great.  Maybe they have improved them or maybe they have just been lucky but either way I thought I would throw that in

THe other thing that's cheap with flormasters is that they use aluminum spray paint to prevent rusting.  Well the paint gets soft and burns off after a while.  I'd definatly go with a stainless steel exhaust.  Flowmaters are ok on V8's but don't do much of anything on a I4.

try using a super-40 series delta instead of the traditional 40.  It is not as loud and the tin sound is gone.  Also the muffler is constructed a lot better.  I just bought one and I will install it soon. I'll let you now everthing about it soon, but I have installed a couple on v8's and they are pretty nice.

I used a Flowmaster 50 Deltaflow and it was okay.  From my research it's the quietest muffler FM offers.

I liked it on the trails, but thought it a little annoying for the neighbors, so I replaced it with an OEM replacement for $30.  Got a simple turndown behind the muffler and it sounds good.
