So I was going to my friends christmas party tonight, and it was so windy, when I got out of the Jeep, the door flung open and the strap bracket snapped off my door!! The heads of the bolts holding the bracket onto the door broke off! Here's my plan of attack tomorrow... Please give me some responce.. let me know if I am going about this wrong or just fine!

For some reason, the bulletin posted before i was ready.. read this one!

So I was going to my friends christmas party tonight, and it was so windy, when I got out of the Jeep, the door flung open and the strap bracket snapped off my door!! The heads of the bolts holding the bracket onto the door broke off! How do I remove the door panel so I can access the bolts and then re install them? I was just planning to use a left handed drill bit to remove them, and then weld the bracket on permenatley. If this is a bad idea, my next plan of attack is to just use self tappers to hold the bracket.

Had the same thing happen to me except it was one of my stupid ass friends on the passanger door.  Luckily he only broke one.  Dont even bother taking off the door pannel, you cant even get access to it.  I just took a drill with a very sharp good bit (no crappy ones here I tried and broke a few) and drill it out.  After drilling a few times and getting a bigger size, the treads were luckily still in tact for me, so hopefully it will be the same for you.  Also use a hammer and tap it with a sharp object to start the drilling and start with a really small bit and work your way up until you think you havent stripped the treads.  Good luck.

That's what I'd do.  Use a tap then start off with a small bit then increase it a size or two.  Once you get close with a reverse bit, it will come out on it's own.  The only thing really holding the threads in is the head.  Without the head, it's just a bit of friction with the captured nut.

happened to me on both my jeep on both sides.  just used some self tappers and they hold up fine.

Same thing happened to me 2 months ago. Mother-in-law opened the door in the wind and snapped the mount right off the door. I drilled out the rivets on the door and then reattached the strap mount using 2 self tapping screws. Worked perfect.









Somebody please pray for me. I have to take my wife clothes shopping today... the day after Christmas!!!

Both of my Jeeps have had this happen.  I just drilled out the old screw and used a 5/16" hex head self tapping screw to replace them.  Luckily we use the type for our equipment racks.  I didn't have to pull either door panel.

Hey everyone...
So I fixed the door today.. Just bought some self tappers that were slightly larger than the hole, used a drill bit to widen the hole in the bracket so the self tapper fit, and screwed it in. Worked like a charm.

I was so happy it was an easy fix, I rewarded myself with a beer....haha

Good to hear you got it fixed.  IMO the way Jeep designed this door is pretty poor.  2 tiny screws to hold it together.
