I messed up
« on: December 17, 2008, 10:03:15 PM »
I bought my blue 97 TJ back in 2002 for $3600. I actually bought 2. I flew out to NYC with a friend and picked up the teal TJ (4cyl/auto ($4800) and drove it to OH for the blue TJ (4cyl/auto). I drove the blue TJ as it wasn't as 'clean' as the teal TJ my buddy drove from OH to KC. I sold teal TJ within a month of ownership. I kept the blue TJ, built it some and use that as my wheeler.

This past summer, I purchased another 97 TJ for $3000 it was red but a 6cyl/auto. I've added a few things and will be 'monstering' it sometime in the spring.

Now, this is where I mess up. Today I bought yet another 97 red TJ, 4cyl/5-sp needing an engine. $2200

Tires have 10k miles, head rebuilt 500 miles ago, water in oil and rear cylinder, header, tilt, sliding door windows, nice stereo, and other little things. I've found a complete 95 YJ 4cyl for $150 for replacement.
I've been talking to some wheeling friends that compete in the R-Rock series (Rubber Belly Racing - RBR) looking for RBR #2.  I could use the half doors on the other red TJ, sell off the other stuff off the TJ to be a capable contender as the #2 team.

Wow, where are you finding all of these cheap Jeeps?  :'(

If you're going to turn one into a buggy, I'll take the horns and visors off your hands.

Finding cheap Jeeps is very time consuming.

The teal and blue were off Ebay. The teal was real clean, ac, stereo, auto, hard doors, new top, new trans (10k mile warranty), tilt, cloth seats, and console. Blue was a very basic TJ with just a stereo. It had/s vinyl seats (front driver's torn), bad carpet, no console, bad stereo, torn windows and neglected top. There is some rust in the body. To what it is now.
The red 6cyl I got from another Jeep forum from the owner asking about brake work. He questioned $1000 estimate to replace the hard/soft lines, calipers, wheel cylinders and the pads/shoes. He was looking to sell anyways, so I gave him an offer. He accepted. 125k, hard doors, new ac, new top, new rear seat, new carpet, new radiator, stereo, cloth seats, console, tilt, needing brake work :roflol:. It has had 2 accidents and the lower rocker panel on driver's side shows filler repair. It is now covered with the LJ rocker cover. My plan was to fly out from KC to NJ shore with my kids, have a little vaca and replace what needed to make it driveable to get back home. Over the month of planning (he travels for work), he was worried that I wouldn't be able to repair in his driveway. So he shipped it for $1000. I still only paid the $3k. I had to replace portions of the steel brake lines as they got holes from the surface rust. I've swapped over my old Ramsey winch, added front and rear bumpers (rear with tire carrier), and added LJ Rubicon panel skids. I've got some harware (D60/14B, custom leafs, Klune/205, Duff radius arm suspension, mil 12bolt wheels, 37's) from another project to develop this into something a little larger.

The new red TJ I got yesterday found on local craigslist. He had 22 people email him and one even gave an offer. Owner countered but the guy never got back. I emailed at 10pm, verbally commited to the sale 8am and purchased at 1pm. Now loan is $57 every 2 weeks for 2 yrs.

Rubber Belly Raceing, huh?  The way you guys bounce those things offa rocks, you need a rubber belly!  I've watched your team in action at Hannibal Rocks- Tom and Debbie are friends of mine (I claim it; they may, well, you know....)  Since I've retired, I've picked up a few too.  I have two WW II survivors- I thought they were Ford GPW's, but now I'm not sure.  They're pretty rough, but I think one is "restorable"; the other (with a "rebar" grille) may be slightly updated and made into a trail runner.  I also picked up a '93 Wrangler puzzle- yep, it's in pieces and piles with a few parts missing.  I came close to getting a '53 Jeep truck- I still think I should have bit the bullet and bought it.  It's a disease, semi-contagious that  only affects a few (un)lucky, beknighted individuals.  You have my sympathy. See you at HR!

You guys going to Hannibal for the New Years Day run?  I haven't been up there in a long time to see Tom and Debbie, need to get back up there.  I'm going to Washita for NYD, it's about half the distance.
