Topic: gas light question

so being used to my yj nd running outta fas numurous amounts of times in it , when my gas light comes on in my tj i fill up, but it only take ten gallons.  is it not a 15 gallon tank, does it rlly have a 5 gallon reserve???  anyone else with a tj have this problem???

When I did the gas tank mod on my tj my gas light came on about a mile before I got to my buddies house where I was going to do the work. Mine usually only took about 10 gals. per fill up also. When I got the tank out I siphoned the gas out of the tank and had 4.5 gals., I bent the arm just a little on the level sending unit float so now it comes on with about 3-3.5 gals. left.

I don't think they have a "reserve" per se, but I know my light will come on at nearly 225ish miles on the tank and I only will fill up after 260, unless I've been traveling or wheeling. It's never left me out of fuel. If you want to find out what fuel tank you have for sure, look at the imprinting on the tank. Mine says TJ18, which means I have a 18 gallon. Don't know for sure if you'll have it, but its worth a look.

On my TJ when the gas light comes on I only get in about 10 gal. But once I let the meter pretty much hit empty and I got almost 15 gal in there

ok so knoing that i may just take a gas can round with me next time i get low and run outta gas purposly just to kno where my heep is at.  stupid chrysler cant do anything right

Most American cars are very generous with their reserve.  My YJ hits E with 3-5 gallons left.

Unless you have a 19gal tank then, you can overfill your tank without knowing it.  No point is running it till it's dry.  Running the pump dry isn't a good idea for the pump.

only vehicle we have that doesn't have a generous fuel light is our 97 gc... usually comes on 1 mile before dry or right after it stops running....

I can tell you from personal experience that my YJ will actually drop BELOW E and still run; about 2 years ago I was driving down aligator allie (the highway that crosses FL from east to west; NOTHING there except for swamps on both sides!) and was running out of fuel.  I thought I would make it no problem, but there was a STRONG headwind.  I made it on fumes back to civilization, but the Jeep just kept on going.  When I filled her up, she took 21 gallons (mind you, mine is the 20 gallon tank)!!!

Of course, I agree that running low on fuel can cause damage to the fuel pump, but I did not have a choice at that time...
