4 wheel drive not disengaging
« on: December 25, 2008, 08:48:54 PM »
hi, I have an 86 2.5L Cherokee, auto trans :fitz:, with command trac,  it seems that I am still engaged in 4wd even though lever is all the way forward in 2H, because i noticed the front drive shaft spinning and acceleration doesn't seem top notch since i just swaped in 4.56's.  i don't think its suppose to spin? i have heard on other jeeps sometimes its common for front drive shaft  to spin as well, just wondering if anyone has any experience in this model. i looked at the vacuum lines and seem to all be hooked up and in decent shape, also my 4wd shifter doesn't seem to click in 2wd there is a little play, think there might be a linkage issue. i have never delt with 4wd issues before, how and how hard is it to adjust the linkage? what else should i look at with this particular set up. any ideas would be appreciated.

I would jack up front and see if it's disengaging.  The drive shaft should not turn unless it doesn't have a vacuum disconnect.  Although, I think that came sometime after '93.  Also, with no vacuum, the axle should be in 2WD.  So if you pull the connect off the diaphragm, it should go into 2wd.

Now, this is only IF you did not install a locker or LSD into the front.  As that will cause the front drive shaft to turn all the time even when the transfer case is in 2WD.

The linkage is fairly easy to adjust.  The handle is connected to the body and the body has a shaft with a adjustable setscrew to the transfer case.

Take a look at the passenger side of the front axle and let us know if you have the vacuum disconnect.

Occasionally the front driveshaft will still spin in 2wd due to the viscous properties of the transfer case fluid.  Check for front wheels spinning in loose gravel to properly determine if in 2wd or 4wd.
