YJ manual to CJ Power steering
« on: December 02, 2005, 08:39:32 AM »
I have a 92 YJ with a 2.5 4 cylinder that has manual steering. I'm looking at adding power steering and got a good deal on a CJ setup. Will the brackets for a 92 YJ fit the steering pump from a CJ? I know the steering box is the same except for the ratio and the steering pump looks the same but I don't have one to set beside it.

Well, first off do you have a pre-84 CJ?  This is when the split between the GM 151 2.5L and the AMC150 2.5L happened.  If you do have an AMC, then do you have a serpentine bely or V belts?  If it's serpentine belts then you probably can use the bracket.  It will fit as long as it's an AMC but will it line up the pump in the right place is the question, I think.

Alright checked the pump this weekend and its a V belt. Bummer but I've already found a power steering pump from a 92 4.0 with all brackets. Will this pump mount up to the 2.5 with the origional brackets from a 4.0 or will I have to buy new brackets?

Have a picture of the front of your engine?  If there isn't anything special on the engine, I would suspect that you could convert it over to a serpentine setup.

The 4.0L and 2.5L share the front brackets and accessories.

I'm sorry I must have said it wrong. The jeep has a serp belt setup. It's a 92 2.5. The pump I bought has a V belt setup. It's an older power steering pump. I have deal on a newer pump from a 4.0 90's modle jeep. Thank you for the info.

OH, you have a '92 and want to add P/S to it!  I thougth you had a CJ...  The 4.0L needs to be 1991 or newer.  Before that teh YJ's used a 4.2L and that's different.  A 1991 or newer PS pump, brackets and box will work with your '92.

You will also need the pitman arm.
