Jeep 2005 Rubicon or 94 Defender 90????????
« on: January 21, 2009, 06:13:01 PM »
I have a 4cyl TJ now, but my brother works for a Jeep dealership and they have great deals on the Rubicon models.  I also noticed the Defender 90's are now under 20k, but yeah around 10 plus yrs old.  If both are stock soft top models about the same price which is a better choice????????

Id go for the rubicon... tj rubi is better in my opinion becasue the jk's are huge (unless you are mainly onroad) i never really liked the look of landrovers. 1 the looks and 2 mainly the drivers mentality. to me it seams like most landrover drivers are the yupi environmentalist yet there the people with the big landrovers with v8's stock.... just my $0.02
1990 YJ 4cly, ax5, 2.5 inch BDS lift, 31 MTr\'s,  Powertrax-lockers all around, track-bars removed, boomerang shackles, warn m8000 winch, electric fan. [sold but not forgotten]

LOL yuppie environmentalists?  The Defender was listed as one of the dirtiest vehicles built when it was in production.   The defender for cool factor, but make sure you've got the $$$ if it needs parts or repair.

Tough choice for sure BUT if it was I, I would get the Defender 90 and not look back.  The D90's have a large aftermarket like Jeeps although a bit more specialized.  The biggest consideration for me is the interior room.  It's a lot larger then a CJ/YJ/TJ.  That makes a big difference for me.  I wouldn't be afraid of it being old since most are second or third vehicles and usually well taken care of since they cost considerably more then a Jeep when new.  The D90's stopped being imported into the US in 1997.  They did not want to have to install airbags and other items to make it comply with US laws.  The V8 is a good engine and based off of the Buick V8, IIRC.  Power shouldn't be an issue.  Stock tires on a Defender are 31x10.5" which were larger then anything else at that time.  Rubicon has 30.5's which is about the same height.

Now when you saw Rubicon, do you mean TJ Rubicon or JK Rubicon.  It makes a difference.

What I really want is a D110 though.  I'd trade my Jeep in a hearbeat.

I meant TJ Rubicon.

I wouldn't want to upgrade eighter one.  Ok maybe just 33's and 2in lift w/everything else stock on eighter model.  I want a lower center of gravity this time.

On the Rubicon I like that it has a better drivetrain and those MOAB wheels look great with 33's.
On the Defender 90 (1994) it just reminds me so much of those used in the African Safari.  Yeah, I like the look but don't know much else about it.  Well, online folks say it is the best stock off road vehicle.  I thought the Rubicon was....

Well, you have to decide what your priorities are.  Do you want something newer?  Do you need more room?  Do you need more power?  Do you want simplicity or do you want stuff like Airbags, ABS, etc...

Other thing to keep in mind.  Defenders are going to be more rustic.  Even with a hardtop, the windows do not roll down, they slide. (Except for the '97 LE) Parts are going to be harder to find and if you go to the Dealer, more expensive.

Yes, the Rubicon has lower gears but it doesn't have a V8 backing it.  Swapping axles on a D90 are easier then on the Rubicon.  The D90 had third members which means bench gear swaps.  The downside is that the axles use closed knuckle design.  Still the Rubicon's have their own problems.  The front stub axles were prone to breaking for some reason and the rear D44 still uses D35 outer axle tubes.

Really, though, the D90 will attract more attention since they are rarer.  A clean one is hard to find since most people seem to have held onto them.  Most will have close to 100K miles on them because of age.  The Rover V8 is a good engine.  British Leland's best, actually.

As for best, that's very subjective.  'Best at what?', should be asked.  I think both would be more then you'd want/need.

Keep in mind the Defender series continues on in the UK and is currently used by SAS, ADF, as well as some USSOC.  Don't confuse the Defender with the other Rovers.

The defender 110 is the 4 door model.  Now I get it. :beers:

I saw one for sale a couple months back on craigslist for $40k plus.  I was wondering why it wasn't the usual 20k to 30k the Defenders 90's go for.

Only just over 500 were ever imported by Land Rover.  A handful came in as Grey market.
